Free Music Notes for Sigur Rós

Free Music Review: Slow, reflective, textured, beautiful
Hit: 5 Stars

It was quite by chance that I stumbled across Sigur Rós about 10 months ago. I was trying to find more information about fellow Icelandians múm and found an mp3 of "Ágćtis Byrjun", the title track from their last album. One listen and I was hooked.

Since then, Ágćtis Byrjun has easliy established itself as one of my favourite albums and the distinguishing feature of having been listened to until the band got around to releasing their next album!

Upon first listening to () I must admit to being a little disappointed. I think I was secretly wishing for Ágćtis Byrjun all over again, which () isn't. It is a much slower and more comtemplative album than its predecessor and not something that is easy to appreciate in one sitting.

I've had () for a little over a week now and it has tunneled itself into my dreams and quiter waking moments. I'm not sold on all of the tracks yet, but track 3, with its exquisite 5-bar piano melody is truly sublime. Tracks 1, 4 and 8 are also standouts for me. I'm less fond of tracks 6 and 7 as they are form the heavier part of the album with massive washes of layered guitar and a driven urgency. That's not to say they aren't great, I'm just partial to the slower stuff.

Sigur Rós and () have reminded me once again of why I listen to and enjoy music so much, a sentiment that's best summed up by a passsage from Hesse's "Glass Bead Game":

"...for after all music is nothing but an act of courage, a serene, smiling, striding forward and dancing through the terrors and flames of the world, the festive offering of a sacrifice".

Free Music Review: Ethereal
Hit: 5 Stars

I was first introduced to Sigur Ros when I heard their music used in "Vanilla Sky." I got their first album and was amazed at how different and unique it was compared to everything else. Ethereal is the word I use more than anything to describe these guys. Just about everyone I knew who was a fan of theirs said that their music was perfect for making love and that comment stuck out for me. However, the song that I just had to have was Track 4 (I call it "The Nothing Song.") That song got me obsessed after watching "Vanilla Sky" and after listening to live versions of it for months I wanted a studio version.
The day this album was released, I remember purchasing it after taking a big psychology test. I was immediately put under their spell and it's one that I don't plan on leaving anytime soon.
The pieces that stick out for me are 1 "Passage," 8 "The Telling," and my precious favorite 4 "The Nothing Song." I also find 3 "Field Trip" relaxes me when I can't fall asleep. Another thing I love about this album is the whole approach of having the listener title the tracks and write for themselves on the blank booklet pages what the songs are to them. I'm not saying that it's way ahead of its time, but it is something you don't see often.
I love listening to this album when it's raining outside. I put it in my cd player, turn the volume up and listen. I'm also planning on doing an interpretive writing to this album soon.
Add a kick of eclecticism to your music collection with these guys. You won't regret it.

Free Music Review: Be careful with this album
Hit: 5 Stars

I say be careful with this album, only because of how emotionally powerful it is. I can honestly say that out of any album I have ever heard in my life, this album is the most thought provoking, and provides the strongest emotional punch of anything in the category of music out there.

Some might say its depressing, some might say that its beautiful, but really its a mix. The entire album presents a rather melancholy atmosphere for its listeners. But dont let that turn you off, unless thats just not your thing. I love it when a band can move me emotionally, that shows to me that they've done their job, because really when you think about it, all music is a form of some exerted emotion.

So with that established, the album is just awesome. Its really one of those things that you would consider "genious" There are no actual lyrics, no english or icelandic, (thats where they're from) and there is no track listing, everything is untitled.

Like I said in the begginning, this album is extremely powerful. Although its rather reserved and mellow, it provides us with extreme emotions, and that can be risky for people that are highly emotional.
Supposedly people have killed themselves while listening to the album. ??

Well Im somewhat of an emotional person, and I have yet to contemplate suicide over this album. Its depressing/melancholy quality is just a contributor to its over all awesomeness.

If you are patient, and allow it to soak in, then I promise after a few listenings you will be hooked.

Free Music Review: WHAT A FANTASTIC SURPRISE!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have to say that first I wasn't very sure if I would like this cd because I read some good and bad reviews for this cd. I will make your decision easier so you don't have to see a lot of reviews because basically they're all the same.

1) Positive reviews: This are the reviews of people that really apreciate this kind of music (like me) and that consider it beautiful and a way of going to "another place" and be really in peace.
2) Negative reviews: These are the reviews of people that say that this CD is absolutely boring and that is just some random sounds and a horrible voice and all that stuff....

Here is the thing, this Cd can be BEAUTIFUL for some people and BORING for other people, I think this is strongly related to the atittude that the listener has for the music. If you are of the people that put this CD on an expects that the songs reach to fabolus climaxes inmediately your wrong, because this kind of music is really slow, mellow, you have to have a possitive atittude while listenting to this and just close your eyes and star really FELLING the music. This is a perfect cd when you are going to sleep and you want to escape from your ordinary life and have a moment of peace, also when you feel confused or alone and you want to hear some good music (the one that really delights your ears) and have a momment of reflexion.

If you are cobard and you don't want to really fell this CD like I did I just can say you that your are getting away of one of the most beatiful things that life offers, the good music.

Free Music Review: ignoring all of the novelty of everything...
Hit: 5 Stars

Forget about the parenthetical title or the lack of song names on the album or that the booklet is blank so that you can go on their website and post your own lyrics and images for the booklet. Just pop it in and listen. As with any Sigur Ros, a 30 second clip is going to be hard to really get any real idea of the song from, but I think even there you can tell that this is amazing music. They have set aside some of the sugary string-driven elements from the last album, and it doesn't necessarily recreate Sigur Ros but I think it provides a clearer view of them as a band. It's great to have Njosnavelin (track 4) on CD finally after hearing various live versions of the song and hearing it in Vanilla Sky, and I must say I was not disappointed with the studio version in the least. They may not be overly experimental, but I think the album still shows great growth for the band as well as a little bit of a different approach to the music. And as usual, I think it's great that Sigur Ros can make you forget about all those little review-friendly novelties when you listen. No matter how much I read about all of these things, when the music starts I'm not thinking about the made-up language this is in or the lack of song titles or anything else. I just enjoy the music and forget all about all of the talk about how long their songs are. This album is 71 minutes long but seems to fly by for me as I listen. That in itself shows that they are succeeding instead of just appearing as some novelty to check out once and discard.
