Free Music Notes for VonFree Music Review: Good, but not very Hit: 4 Stars
This album is good, but not very. The 3rd track really disappointed me. I just bought this album to listen to the 5th track. If you're a fan, try and buy this album. It might be good for you. But if you're not a fan, try their other albums. This album might not be best for you or maybe the other way around. Just try it, if you like it, keep it. If you don't like it, maybe you could give it to somebody else who loves this kind of music. If you don't like it, don't buy it! If you like it, buy it!
Free Music Review: While It Wasn't What I was Expecting Hit: 3 Stars
My reaction to "Von" generally veers toward a favorable one. Sigur Ros was right to populate the cover art of "Von" with pictures of infants; their sound is definitely embryonic here. "Sigur Ros", the first track, contains echoes of early releases by Landing ("Oceanless"), Auburn Lull ("Alone I Admire"), and Stars of the Lid ("Gravitational Pull..."), although I'm sure this is entirely coincidental, as none of those CD's were in print at the time that Sigur Ros recorded "Von". I was expecting a slightly more cohesive flow to the CD, and believe that they could have easily done away with tracks 4 ("Leit and Lifi"), 6 ("18 Sekkundur..."), 8 ("Verold Ny Og O"), and 10 ("Mistur"), while also trimming the 6+ minutes of dead air from 12 until "Rukrym" kicks in. What is left over definitely presages that Sigur Ros was on their way to developing their signature sound, with tracks 3 ("Hun Jora"), 5 ("Myrkur"), 7 ("Haffsol"), 9 ("Von") and 11 ("Syndir Guos") the most indicative of the direction they would take, and track 2 ("Dogun") providing an intriguing transition from track 1 ("Sigur Ros") the aforementioned massive ambient piece.
Other reviewers have taken pains to indicate that "Von" does not possess the polish of either "Aegenis Byrnum" or ( ), so I can strongly advise someone new to Sigur Ros to start with one of those two releases (preferably "Aegenis Byrnum"). If you are already familiar with their subsequent releases, however, this CD is worth getting simply to trace the genesis of their sound; just remember to program around every even-numbered track after 2, and fast forward through about the first six minutes of 12.
Free Music Review: Good, but not essential Hit: 3 Stars
The sound is cleary different from their other CDs, but it is still obviously Sigur Rós. It's pretty atmospheric, with some intense sound and voice effects.
There's not too much to say about it.
I won't say it's necessary to own this CD if you consider yourself a Sigur Rós fan, but if you feel the need to own all of their albums, go ahead and make a purchase: you probably won't be too disappointed.
Free Music Review: Clues of glorious futures Hit: 3 Stars
Mostly this album is an overblown dark ambient hodgepodge of genre fittings, but occasionally the brilliance that would become this band comes through. Their debut is perhaps the only album where Sigur Ros could actually be heard sounding like something else (quintessential shoegazers Slowdive come to mind) and the only album in their respected discography not needed to date.
