Free Music Review: One of the best albums ever!
Hit: 5 Stars

I have waited a long time to write a review for this album, because I don't want to do any unjustice to it (I hope I don't). I bought the Silverchair albums backwards (starting with Diorama) and this one is definately my favorite. Unlike frogstomp and freakshow, which sounded a lot alike (except for some Indian style instruments in Freakshow) this album really branches out. It seems as though Daniel really let his emotions shine through on this album, and they say that suffering brings upon great art; this is a great example of it. I agree with whoever said they had to listen to this album more than once to appreciate it. This is true with all of Silverchair's stuff, so I call it the "Silverchair effect". It shows you how impressive the music is if you can't even consume it in one listening. If you didn't already know, most of the songs deal with Daniel's issues of depression, anxiety, anorexia, etc just basically any emotion that anyone has ever had to deal with. I think the songs can also be interpreted in many ways, leaving you to be the director of the story. Here's a summary of the songs:
"Emotion Sickness"-Guest David Heflegoft on piano (amazing!) This is the longest song on the album and it contains a lot of soft string parts, while having the piano come in for a manic approach. My favorite part is near the end of the song when Daniel starts screaming "Get up...Get up..." Really beautiful stuff.
"Anthem for the Year 2000"- This is said to be the "stadium rock song" and is something you will probably have stuck in your head (although if you start singing about the year 2000 in public people might look at you weird since it's nearing 2006). It's what I like to call a power-rock song, which you can stomp your feet or clap your hands to and is a great song for those who loved the first two silverchair albums.
"Ana's Song (Open Fire)"- In my opinion, the most popular song on the album. Ana is used as a metaphor for anorexia, and it has a very nice, beautiful sound. I dunno how to describe it.. poignant? It's definately one of my favorites and if you don't buy this album, at least buy this single.
"Spawn"- Great animal liberation song! It's nice to have some hot vegan guys (oh there are so few it seems) This is definately hardcore, and with the beginning lyrics "Death becomes clearer through bloodshot eyes" it can be misinterpreted. Give this one a chance it's awesome!
"Miss You Love"-This is a softer one that even my mother can tolerate. Although it seems like a sweet love song when you hear the word's "I've no respect for you" you really have to think twice. Nice song, smooth feel.
"Dearest helpless"- I really liked this song and was disappointed it wasn't made into a single. Daniel's voice is flawless!
"Do you feel the same"- The lyrics in this song I really like especially " Could I be read if I was see through or would you just read my spine?" I'm not quite sure what it means, but it fits together well.
"Black Tangled Heart"-Another softy with underlying boughts of frustration it seems. I love how the lyrics make the writer seem so vulnerable.
"Point of View"- This one is interesting both musically and lyrically. I love the ending of the song and the overall appeal seems as though it's almost painful and frustrating to be able to admit the contents of the song. The line "Pretend the steak's a cowboy and the kiss will kill you" is a little confusing, but I think it could again point to animal liberation.
"Satin Sheets"- This is a nice punk song that will have you up and moving! Great for fans of old Silverchair.
"Paint Pastel Princess"-Uses alliteration (obviously seen from the title). The only thing that confused me when I first heard the lyrics was "Bo and Aropax". I later found out this was a name for some antidepressants that Daniel was taking.
"Steam will Rise"-WoW! This song really has an amazing sound, and is almost as long as Emotion Sickness. One of the best off the album that won't leave you hoping for a more tortured angelic voice, and out of this world music.
