Free Music Review: Unexpected Find

I first heard of Sylvio Rodriguez from the BMW Films website that featured critically acclaimed directors for their commercials. One of them was by the famous Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai where he used the track 'Unicornio' from this album. I immediately fell in love with this song, although i don't understand Spanish, i went to the nearest record store and purchased the album.
All the tracks in this album are wonderful! The melodies are hypnotic and will definitley not disappoint. I must stress the fact that even though i don't understand Spanish, i enjoyed it tremendously. It has a strong cuban-jazz flavor and yet not too overwhelming. the female vocal is reminiscent of Celia Cruz. There are soft romantic ballads as well as upbeat tempos that will sure to lighten up your mood. It is perfect for a rainy Sunday afternoon.

Unicornio Poster

Digitally remastered of the 1995 album from the Cuban singer/songwriter whose tender balladry offshoots his hard-edged, politically-slanted lyrics. A spearhead of the nueva trova (New Ballad) style of nueva cancion (New Song), Rodriguez masterfully blends romantic tunes with protest material condemning colonization and the tyranny that swept through Latin America in the late '60s and early '70s.
