Free Music Review: Please Take Notice

Please take notice of "A Kiss in the Dreamhouse", because you probably won't experience another album like it. Call it what you want: goth, post-punk, experimental, it doesn't matter; "Dreamhouse" is just great. Let's start with the songs first:
1. Cascade: This one starts the album off with a bang. It starts off slowly but then literally tumbles down on you like a gushing, crytsal-blue waterfall. Siouxsie Sioux gives some of her most impassioned vocals and Budgie's tribal drums echo like they're being played in the Grand Canyon.
2. Green Fingers: A really wacky song about something rotten going on in Siouxsie's garden. It's an almost impish-sounding song and its sparkling bells and bits of recorder give it a late-period Beatles feel.
3. Obsession: Oh, man, this one has got to be my favorite. It's really dark and spooky, with lots of echo and an eerie wooshing noise running over it. Apart from the guitars and strings, lots of unconventional instruments are used, like chains, bells, chimes, and foot stomps that give it a quasi-haunted house feel. It's wild.
4. She's a Carnival: Less experimental than the tracks above, this song strikes you as a bit conventional at first, with its Stonsey guitar riffs and catchy pop-rock chorus. But then the song proves you wrong with its unexpected Calliope organ reprise. "Carnival", indeed!
5. Circle: The longest song on the album, it's probably the strangest as well, as it uses a creepy tape loop of the strings section from the band's hit single "Fireworks". Sioux tells a spine-tingling tale of the horrors of domestic life, and the song just continues to spiral.
6. Melt!: My second favorite after "Obsession", this has an almost spaghetti western feel to it with its speeded-up guitar that sounds like a mandolin. Sioux's vocals are great as usual, and the cooing background vocals complement her well.
7. Painted Bird: This one took me an extremely long time to really get into, but it has managed to grow on me, and it is now my third favorite. Sioux chants the vocals rather than singing them, and the late John McGeoch gives a soaring guitar part. The church organ and unexpected electronic reprise are also great.
8. Cocoon: Probably the Banshees's first (and only) real foray into jazz. It reminds me of being trapped in a dark cave full of spiders. Like the rest of the songs, it has echo in it, but this one seems to have the most.
9. Slowdive: An odd choice for the first single, as it is the album's closing track, but it's great anyway. It floored me when I first heard it, simply because of how darn catchy it is. The strings are like the famous theme from "Psycho", and Sioux's vocals are at their catty best.
Overall, this is Siouxsie and the Banshees's finest, most mature effort, and you'll want to add it to your collection.
