Free Music Review: Highly anticipated, highly rewarding!

To start off, I have to say that I am a big fan of Skillet and preordered this CD 2 months before it came out. This was the first CD I have ever preordered, but I anticipated this one so much I couldn't resist. I read much of the discussion about the CD as it was being planned and recorded, so I had really high expectations. When I finally got the CD, it did not let me down. I am by no means saying it's perfect, and I'm sure I would not call it Skillet's best album, but I still really enjoy it. Sure some of the lyrics are somewhat lame/repetetive or similar to those on Comatose, but there is enough original material on the album that I can overlook the few errors. Personally, I really connect with the lyrics of multiple songs, so that helps me overlook the flaws.
As far as the individual tracks go, I do have some comments about some of them:
Hero and Monster were released as singles prior to the CD release, plus were played in concert, so I was very familiar with them by the time the full album came out. Now I find myself almost ignoring these 2 songs because it's almost like they are not really "new" songs. Still, they are good songs.
Awake and Alive: Very good song! I tend to prefer harder rocking songs, and this is one of the hardest songs from Skillet since the Collide CD. I really like this song, both because of how hard it rocks and because of the lyrics. While they may not be the best lyrics John Copper can write, they are still powerful to me. Definitely one of my top 3 songs from this album.
It's Not Me It's You: Another harder rocking song, plus just an angry song. Basically talking about a failed relationship and pointing most of the blame on the other person. Somewhat enjoyable, though can get some negative emotions boiling.
Sometimes: Final rocker on the regular edition. I really relate to these lyrics, so I have a hard time actually considering their quality. Another of the top 3 for me.
Lucy: Powerful song to end the regular edition with. Probably the best song lyrically, and can be quite the tear-jerker. Guitar player Ben Kasica reportedly informed a fan that the story of this song comes from regret about an abortion, but the lyrics were left just vague enough to be applied to just about any loss.
Dead Inside: This Deluxe Edition song is another rocker, thus lending itself to my approval in that regard. Beyond that, I think the lyrics are very good, though not perfect. Also in the top 3 for me.
As for the rest of the songs, there are mostly power ballads, and a few of these sound very similar to songs from Comatose. I can still enjoy them now, but eventually I imagine I might skip a few of these songs as I listen.
Overall, I would probably give this album 9/10. I am not really sure yet how this album compares to Comatose in my opinion, but I do think that Skillet did better on Collide. This CD does seem to be moving somewhat away from Comatose and closer to Collide in style, but lyrically is probably a step down. Even so, I am satisfied. Skillet continues to be my favorite band and I look forward to more great music in the future. In the meantime, I will enjoy this album!
