Free Music Review: Could Have Been the Next GNR Album
Hit: 5 Stars

In "It's Five O'Clock Somewhere," Slash proves something that most of us alrady knew: he is a great guitarist, who plays with more passion and soul (he's half-black) than any other guitarist in the past 20 years. I'm tired of hearing this stuff from pop music magazines saying that "It's 5 O'clock Somewhere" is bargain bin fodder. First, I had to play $15.00 for this CD and it is impossible to find in any bargain or used CD bin. Second, the music on here is really good. Let's get started:
1. Neither Can I 10/10- One of the songs that is hard-rock influenced blues, instead of vise-versa. Amazing song about suicide and is one of the few songs on here where the lyrics are above mediocre, here they're really good. Slash & Co. sound great, even Eric Dover is amazing.
2. Dime Store Rock 10/10- Not rock music about a dime store, but the song is about rock that you would buy at a dime store, I'll let you firgure the rest out. Fast paced, great song with great guitars and remarkable riffs and hooks. Slows down into another blues song at the end.
3. Beggars and Hangers-On 9/10- Has one of my favorite riffs of all time. Could have been the best song on the album, but the verses are slow and boring and the riff doesn't show up until the chorus.
4. Good To Be Alive 7/10- Complex song, but nothing special at all, and Dover's vocals are annoying.
5. What Do You Wanna Be 9/10- I like this song, but some will find Dover's vocals annoying on this one too. A fun song, but most of the band except for Slash is mediocre. Another song that slows down for a bluesy ending.
6. Monkey Chow 9/10- Great song and melody with stupid lyrics written by Gilby Clarke, one of his only contributions on the entire album.
7. Some City Ward 10/10- For whatever reason I found the lyrics sort of funny: "He missed the pool by inches, so he won't be walking soon." Hahaha. Sounds a lot like Aerosmith's "Nobody's Fault."
8. ---- the Pit 10/10- Short instrumental with the first half being fast-paced hard rock, and the second part, bass-influenced blues written by Alice in Chains and Ozzy alum, Mike Inez.
9. Lower 10/10- Took several listens before I liked this one, but now it's one of my favorites on the album. Like "Neither Can I" is a blues song with a heavy hard rock influence. One of the only times in music history where that thing on the guitar with the tube where Slash makes his guitar "talk," actually helps the song, unlike Peter Frampton.
10. Take It Away 8/10- Decent song is made worthwhile from Slash's solo.
11. Doin' Fine 6/10- A stupid song about a never-ending party, comes close to filler status.
12. Be the Ball 9/10- Even though the song is simple lyrically, is very complex musically. Slash and Gilby Clarke sound great together.
13. I Hate Everybody (But You) 6/10- Even with funny lyrics and one of the best solos on the disc, this song is a waste of time.
14. Back and Forth Again 9/10- A ballad that actually isn't that bad, with Slash's best solo on the album.
Slash had originally written these songs for the next GNR album, and they almost were (Axl loved them) but him and SLash had an argument so Slash formed his own GNR with Clarke, Sorum, and Reed; Mike Inez replaced McKagan, but Duff helped write "Beggars." Many people complain about Dover's vocals, but for the most part, they are very good. A very good album that is overlooked because it does not have the GNR name on it.
