Free Music Notes for All Hope Is GoneFree Music Review: Growth Can Be Painful Hit: 5 Stars
This being Slipknot's 4th album of a career nearing 10 years, they are reaching that point where what they as a band call "progression" runs the risk of being called "selling out" by their fans who loved them from the word "go". 20 years ago, my friends and I slapped the "sell out" tag on more than a few bands (Metallica being the biggest offender of our youth). So, I have to wonder if this album will be Slipknot's transition album that leads them to that inevitable fork in the road where they progress beyond their core fans or run the risk of becoming stale. It seems to be a very thin tightrope to walk for every band, especially in the genre metal where fans can turn into foes overnight.
With all of that in mind, I can see the aspects of "All Hope Is Gone" that might make some of Slipknot's original fans angry or disinterested. Compared to the all-out-fury of "Iowa" or the combination of technical mastery and melodic foreplay of "Volume 3", "All Hope Is Gone" is often more straight-forward and subdued by comparison. It is fairly evident that Slipknot is focused more on writing songs first rather than taking a multitude of riffs and building a great song around them. In this case, for me, the approach works well.
What I can sympathize with those disenchanted by this album about is that the singles on this album are clear, present and obviously crafted for radio and mainstream exposure. Granted, I think "Psychosocial" is a very powerful song as far as singles are concerned, but some of the softer stuff on this album can get a little too soft at times. At this point, I like most of it, but I can see why others might not.
For those seeking the Slipknot of old, "All Hope Is Gone" is bookended by two mega-tracks that are as brutal and violent as anyone could ever want, especially the finale which is the perfect rallying cry for this time in our history. Much of this album is still very good, but I do wish they would have explored more of the technical aspects of the last album, as things get to be a tad formulaic at times.
Personally, I think "All Hope Is Gone" meets most of the expectations and anticipation that has heaped upon this album prior to its release. I think that in time, a good amount of people that are initially turned off by this album will find plenty to like about it.
Free Music Review: More like ALL HOPE IS GAINED Hit: 5 Stars
Everyone knows slipknot from the past as the hardcore metal band that made music that only seemed to address rage. that is, nine members in masks, screaming until the throat bleeds, strumming at light speed at distortion level 10 thousand, and beating the cymbals & double foot pedal so fast the mind struggles to comprehend it. all that equals a riotous, verbal and instrumental massacre of what any non-hardcore metal fan wouldn't even classify as music. i sure dont (with the exception of the subliminal verses). but now slipknot's full out 4 year effort to create something that more people can actually appreciate has paid off. Anyone who likes iowa, don't even consider this album. you will just end up insulting slipknot. but anyone who has enough sense to appreciate a maturing band's introduction of variety, dynamics, REAL solos, singles worthy of impressing those who dont like their ears bleeding, and even a BALLAD. yeah, take a breath... will be impressed. i'll compare slipknot's evolution to avenged sevenfold's. everyone thinks hardcore mind numbing violence is awesome, honestly, for most, it loses novelty quickly. both of the bands realized that, and in a painstaking effort, released new albums that, if it weren't for the introduction songs, you would think it was a different band. so for those thinking the brutal introduction of AHIG is indicating the nature of the rest of the album, think again. Every song truly is different, and good. and because slipknot turned the intensity level, from the stratosphere, you can really tell! the tempo in particular never stays the same. Dead memories and psychosocial are the most creative tracks of the whole album, and they are on the radio. The rest are right up there. And the selling point for me wih this album was slipknot's ability to finally create something meaningful. Songs that people are gonna remember. It grows on me more every time. They expanded their portfolio in both directions of intensity, slightly up for some songs, WAY down for others. but the experimentation reequired for a band to keep or get people interested is what its all about. 5 stars
Free Music Review: Ear Candy for Music lovers! Slipknot delivers quality hard hitting goodies!! Hit: 5 Stars
I was taken a back when I first heard this album well the first half anyway. It does not sound like Slipknot at first. The guitars seemed to be tuned different so you don't get alot of the deranged heavy drone Slipknot is known for. Instead you get a straightfoward heavy hitting full bodied guitar sound, which is great but it was very off putting at first. I can understand the Stone Sour comparisons for the majority of the song chorus parts contain clean melodic vocal parts similar to Wait and Bleed, Left Behind, and Danger Keep Away, Circles etc. Which is not bad either actually it is quite a tasty mix it just once again does not sound like trademark Slipknot. As I began to listen more closely over and over and let the entire album play I was very pleased and you will be too if you take the time to open up and enjoy what it is that's there and that is quality, hard hitting, unrelentless, and very very good music! I know people say "whats the point in repeated listens in order to enjoy music, I know whats good the moment I hear it, and this ain't good" Well that's a weak and terrible way to judge music. Any good art takes a discriminating eye and an ability to enjoy from all angles, in order to spill variety into the mind and enjoy every bit and piece of the said art. Music that is simple and pleasing and requires no thought is called "Pop music" and fades from your mind very fast. This album is in my head to stay and I agree what Corey said about this album That the world is not ready for it and it will rip your face off! Well here I stand faceless and in total of awe of the demolition crew nine known as Slipknot!!!!

Free Music Review: if you were a fan of slipknot before but you are not now then you were never a slipknot fan before Hit: 5 Stars
i have listened to their record label debut and every thing up till ALL HOPE IS GONE before i go deeper in to my review for this CD i did like slipknot when they first came out that is because i have not heard of them until late '03 ever since then i have loved every thing that they have done i have heard die hard slipknot fans say they did not like this album because it was a lot like VOL 3 which i also liked also this is by far the best album that slipknot has made if you are a fan and you expect Iowa then then you really are not a fan of slipknot to expect them to make the same album again this album is a step in maturity, Corey's singing and in the lyrics themselves i love the screaming every once in a while depends on the mood i am in but when i hear fan's or maggots as they are called by slipknot bitch about this album because it is to soft they strayed away from the sound that was in Iowa it pisses me of as maggot a fan of slipknot that you criticize them for maturing bringing in acoustic guitars i heard from another great musician that if it sounds good acoustic than it will sound better with electric guitars quoted by Brent smith from Shine down it is a very well rounded metal/rock album if you liked slipknot before then you like them now while listening to the album i imagining what the songs will sound like live i can only wait to hear and see them live i say this do not listen to anybody that says that this is a bad album because it is not they just want another Iowa album they just do not understand a band growing and maturing as a artist it is a must buy if you are a fan like i have before if you were a fan before but you are not now then you never was a fan of slipknot because you stick with that bend no matter how bad you think a album is that they came out with
Free Music Review: Best Slipknot Album (if you are an open minded rock fan) Hit: 5 Stars
Updated on 12/27 with a slightly more objective comments.
Disclaimer: If you are a music fan whose listens to a particular genre (i.e., metal ) you are going to feel disappointed. Specifically, if you are one of the Slipknot fans who consider Iowa to be Slipknot's best album you will definitely hate this one. However, if you like rock music in general (For example, I listen to anything from Radiohead to Slayer) then you will really appreciate this album.
Although I'm hard pressed not to pick sides and choose a favorite album, I can say that I've been listening to this album as much as I did with their self-titled debut (the one that made me a Slipknot fan to begin with). Everyone has different musical preferences and tastes, so I can understand why people who predominantly listen to "metal" would prefer Iowa (given that it's currently the band's heaviest release). Given that I listen to a much more larger scope of music genres, I found Iowa to be be on the one-dimensional side. To the dislike of many fans, with Vol. 3, the band made a drastic change in their music, incorporating solos, adding more melodic choruses, and varying the tempo of the music in the whole album and within songs. At the time of its release I was a bit shocked at the new direction of the band. However, now I understand that it was all part of the natural evolution of the band and a stepping stone to All Hope is Gone. With the new album, Slipknot has been able to capture the best elements of all their previous albums while maintaining flow/structure through all the songs. They have continue to expand their sound and grow musically, which any music fan in general should greatly appreciate.
