TO ALL YO MAGGOTS OUT THERE!!! Let me start this review by tellin everybody who reads this that this band is probably one of the best new age bands that can eva exist, apart from Linkin park,Mudvayne,Disturbed&Godsmack This isnt "rap" as one of the reviewers who gave it a one star called it,from the musical point of view, this band is heavy,2 rhythm/lead,1 bass,1(extremely fast)drummer,1 sampler,2 percussionsts,1 d.j.& 1 hell of a kick ass vocalist, this 9 member outfit comprises of sLiPkNoTThey hail from De Moines,Iowa and have heeps of musical history behind them, this is the first album theyve cut and I think that this will go down in history as one of the heaviest new age albums eva!!! Every member,I MEAN every member have contributed to this album in every aspect The Drumming is outstanding and this guy"Joey jordison",is nothing but a drum machine with his constant use of real heavy double bass(another really good double bass drummer is vinnie paul from pantera)its a treat to lissen to the way he uses each and every cymbal on the songs and lemme warn ya thia guy is fast!!!!!(Lissen 2 the songs sic, wait&bleed and the intro to eyeless)Joey plays the guitar on a side project called murderdolls To add to the noise are the 2 percussionists who also play a very important role amidst all this heaviness(Shawn(the clown)is the founder of this band) Paul gray(the pig face) is the bassist and the co founder of this band along with Shawn crahan The two guitarists, mic thompson and JiM"peach"root are the ones behind the mind blowing riffs and heavy solos in this album The First song on this album along with "iowa",are composed by dj Sid Now Corey, frontman of this 9 member outfit, does some amazin throat on this album, especialy on songs such as sic, wait&bleed, eyeless, liberate,me inside and plenty more!!!! Corey is said to be the most silent member of the band but very aggressive on stage,he is presently on a side project along with guitarist jim root called"Stone sour",which is also a wonderful band in a diff way,its real nice 2 lissen 2 Corey whether he does throat or not, from this band theres a song of his which appears on the "Spiderman",ost called Bother which speaks a lot about the extended vocal range that this guy has Added to all the madness are the masks that all the members wear, this is something that has really influences their music as well To all who read my review I wud strongly recomend Slipknots Disasterpieces on (DVD),this release is classic example of the wat the band are all about on stage mic thompson(the guitarist)has a side project on his mind as well There are rumours though that this band might break up,but on the other hand there are also rumous that they are in the studio working on their third album If you like this album u will also like iowa, which is heavier in a diff way And then if ud start lissenin 2 this band ona reular basis and freak out on their music(Like I do!),Pick up the pledge of Allegiance tour(also feat mudvayne,System of a down&American head charge)&Ozzfest 2001 which also has a very wide range of some amazin artists&bands such as marlyin manson, the God Ozzy himself,Disturbed,Black Label society,Mudvayne,Linkin Park&a lots more All in all if ud like 2 go crazy and headbang 2 some real heavy music, pick this album up&trust me its well worth it,ur not gonna regret this @all keep rockin!!!!!

Rating:***** - Perfect **** - Excellent *** - Good ** - Average * - Poor 1. 742617000027 - *** Eerie sounds of sampling mixed in with the phrase "The Whole Thing I Think Is Sic" looped repetitively. Classic SlipKnoT Intro, superior to the one on Iowa. 2. (Sic) - **** The first song off of S/T. Heavy and intense, it shows off the technical abilities of all 9 members together. Solid track. 3. Eyeless - ***** Amazing production. Contains the memorable chorus "You Can't See California Without Marlon Brando's Eyes". Great guitar work juxtaposed against the loud vocals and awesome drumming/percussion. 4. Wait And Bleed - ***** The break-through song that brought them platinum success. Taylor's ethereal singing is what makes this song stand out. His great vocal range makes this one of the most melodic and commercial songs in SlipKnoT's repertoire. 5. Surfacing - **** Awesome sampling/synth work by Craig Jones (5) and impressive scratching done by DJ Sid Wilson (0). Both of their absense were greatly missed on Iowa. Blaring chorus and heavy guitars makes this song a powerful addition to S/T. 6. Spit It Out - ***** Absolutely Mesmerizing! Easily SlipKnoT's best song to date. Corey's incredibly fast rapping is in perfect timing to the simple but effective guitars of James and Mick. Delivered with absolute perfection. The epitome of this band's musical brilliance. 7. Tattered & Torn - ** The closest track resembling somewhat of an instrumental on this album. Although initially creepy and interesting, it becomes tediously repetitive. Satisfactory. 8. Me Inside - ***** Astounding sampling and scratching once again. An extremely beautiful chorus with effective guitars. Short and compelling. Very well executed. 9. Liberate - **** Devastating vocals provided by Taylor but is also fairly catchy. Intensity builds as time progresses. Decent track. 10. Prosthetics - ** An extremely intriguing intro which tanked into a fall-flat performance. Nothing too special. Could have been a lot better. 11. No Life - *** A fairly good song with a lot of resemblance to Liberate. A little disorganized at times but still a worthy song. 12. Diluted - **** Great lyrics and very original. The replayability of this track is one of the highest on this CD. 13. Only One - **** With the equivalent speedy lyrics of Spit It Out, it does a decent job of building up the intensity into the chorus. A bit short but a stimulating performance. 14. Scissors - **** Disturbingly intriguing. An incredibly dark and twisted theme but surprisingly listenable. Taylor spills a lung and some organs during in the end. 15. Eeyore [Bonus] - ***** Without a doubt, the heaviest song on S/T. Joey Jordison (1), who has been doing an outstanding job on the drums throughout the whole album puts on an even more breathtaking exhibition in this gem of a track. Everyone puts on an amazing last-ditch effort to conclude their incredible self-titled debut. Overall - ***** Revolutionary Nu-Metal. Highly Recommended. - aZnXgIn.
Free Music Review: In an Era of Lousy Metal, Slipknot Delivers the Goods! Hit: 5 Stars
First of all, if you are going to judge the band based on the gimmicky masks, I want to remind you of a few things. First of all, look at the band Kiss. They made some great music that has really stood the test of time, yet they went onstage all the time in full makeup. Secondly, what the band looks like has nothing to do with the musical experience. And lastly, because of the masks, the members of this band can live normal lives. No one really recognizes them without the masks, hence they don't suffer the burden of public recognition when they don't want it.
I grew up in the late 80's/early 90's. I grew up on and still listen to bands like Guns 'n Roses, Metallica, Megadeth, Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Ozzy, Anthrax, and Van Halen. As far as the metal I enjoy listening to, apart from some prog metal bands you've never heard of, I always felt like Pantera was the last great metal band...that is until Slipknot showed up on the scene.
I would say 98% of the 'metal' that has come out since the mid-90's is crap. Most of it really isn't even metal, and the rest is unoriginal and bland. With Slipknot, we get nine guys from Iowa who have liquid metal pumping through their veins and a talent for writing music that is ground breaking in the metal arena, but still commercially acceptable by the general public. They combine elements of rap, thrash, death metal, hardcore, and alternative music to make up a signature sound that sets this band apart from the rest. They took these risks and developed a new sound that has the heavy explosiveness of bands like Pantera and Slayer, yet sells albums like the Dave Matthews Band! A metal fan couldn't ask for more.
I'm not that thrilled with the two followups to this debut album, simply because they don't develop the sound that much, but as far as this recording goes, I consider it to be one of the best metal albums of the last ten years. I saw the band a few times when they were touring for this album, including Ozzfest and Tattoo the Earth. The energy of the music comes alive and the band delivers an awesome concert experience.
The more popular songs her are '(sic),' 'Eyeless,' 'Wait and Bleed,' and 'Spit it Out.' Besides the sheer heaviness, I like the band because of their versatility. All the songs on this disc sound different, and even within songs, the music takes on an almost progressive nature with all the different changes. A great example of this is the song 'Me Inside.' The band launches into a 'nursery-rhyme-type' vocal section reminiscent of Korn. Then for the break in between verses, we hear turntables. After the verse again, the vocals totally change into a strong, clear vocal that sounds more like Soundgarden, ('I wasn't promised a thing/You keep mocking me...') - and then for the line 'Before you know it/after you're gone' it sounds like Pantera.
I'm not going to do a song-by-song analysis. Just buy the album and listen for yourself. It would be a major mistake to overlook this gem.
Free Music Review: 4.2/5 but I think it really should be a 5... Hit: 5 Stars
And again. It's me. Writing another review.
742617000027 - 0/5 - Pointless honestly. All it shows is Craig's sampling skills. Which are good but we're talking about the song, not the person.
(sic) - 4/5 - The only thing I have to say about this song is (sic).
Eyeless - 4/5 - Interesting chorus. Particularly interesting due to the fact that some homeless guy said it. Goes to show that the most random things make good songs. I'm not saying take this approach when writing songs, it worked for this song. I like the middle where it slowed down slightly with Corey's screeching.
Wait & Bleed - 5/5 - Great lyrics. Amazing vocals. Corey never seems to dissapoint me with his voice. It's either growling out vulgarities to prove a point or pumping out heart-felt emotions in the form of the voice of an angel.
Spit It Out - 5/5 - I like the rap/growl type dealie he does. It's very suiting for this song. The song has a great riff and the beginning with the growls is just awesome. The end of this song also leaves you wanting to listen to it over and over again.
Tattered & Torn - 3/5 - I liked the MFKR version so much better. Even though Corey's vocals are so much hotter than Anders' are. Anywho. On with the show...
Frail Limb Nursery - 5/5 - If you don't understand why I jsut gave this sample dealie a 5, read on. It comes right before the song Purity, and it just adds on to the sickness behind the whole Purity story and why Corey wrote about it. Which leads me to the next song...
Purity - 5/5 - Heart-felt lyrics with a dollop of Slipknot. It's a really sad story. If you read up on it and then listen to this song, you'll feel more emotional towards it.
Liberate - 5/5 - Overall great song. Even though the beginning kind of sounds like he says "Liberate my bananas..." I laughed so hard when I heard this so for the first time. But it's a good song overall anyways. Good listen. Guarantee you won't waste your time.
Prosthetics- 3/5 - Corey's lyrics never fail to amaze me. Same goes for this song's lyrics. But the instrumental parts are just a pain to listen to. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but it's still not a masterpiece.
No Life - 5/5 - I love the lyrics to this song. Good everything. There's no other way to explain it.
Diluted - 4/5 - Sad lyrics in a way but the song isn't all that great. Not much more to say about it...
Only One - 5/5 - Way better than the MFKR version. Thank god they redid this with Corey on vocals. Love the lyrics (as always). Great song. Listen to it.
Scissors - 10/5 - This song is so sad and amazing I can't even explain it. It's just so amazing. I love it.
Average rating is 4.2 and I'm going to round it up to 5 because I really like this CD and somewhere along my rant of vocals and guitars, I probably messed up on a rating. But this definately deserves a 5.
Free Music Review: A Debut To Be Proud Of Hit: 5 Stars
When you think of Slipknot, naturally the first thing that comes to mind is the masks and jumpsuits, the anti-image image. Fortunately, once you get past that there is great music that comes roaring out of this 9 man metal machine. Let's start with the basics. The guitar exhibited by the bands two guitarists is admirable in its own right, it ranges from delicately intricate ("Prosthetics") to all out aural assault ("Liberate", "Only One"). This, in combination with AMAZING percussion courtesy of Joey Jordison, serves as the foundation for the entire album. Just the velocity that Jordison is able to achieve is mind blowing. I have seen them live and Jordison is just simply an incredible drummer all around, I cannot emphasize this enough! I like the addition of a sampler just because he adds so many interesting little "bells and whistles" to the music. Most of these are very subtle, but once you notice them they will always stand out. The tribal percussion adds a nice touch to the more haunting tracks ("Scissors"). After Jordison, the major standout is vocalist/lyricist Corey Taylor. His vocal range, both emotionally and dynamically, is nearly limitless. He can go from rap ("Spit It Out") to blood soaked growling ("Surfacing") to singsong melodic ("Wait and Bleed") to crystal clear belting ("Me Inside") to disturbingly haunting ("Prosthetics"). The lyrics are for the most part intelligent, despite Taylor's penchant for a certain F-word. At times they are even sardonically witty. There are several tracks that are standouts: "Wait and Bleed" for being bold enough to combine melody and thrash, "Spit it Out" (particularly the hyper version off the Digipak) shows Taylor's ability to unleash a string of words at a head spinning velocity, "Me Inside" also showcases Taylors abilities most notably on the "I wasn't promised at thing..." line. and "Scissors" for the sheer creepiness of the song, if you listen to it in a dark room, it will cause your imagination to run wild with thoughts of what may be hiding in the darkness. By far my favorite track is "Prosthetics." It is somewhat of a sadistic love song, that tells a story of someone completely enveloped and obsessed with another person to the point of actually kidnapping them and keeping them all to themselves. Listen for the line "Better make yourself at home..." I won't tell you the rest but it truly take the idea of obsession to an entirely new level! Overall this is an awesome album, except for the exclusion of "Purity" which is truly an amazing song. I never used to listen to any metal at all but after listening to this just once, I was addicted and to this day Slipknot is my favorite band, so just remember to look past the masks and appreciate the creativity and uniqueness of the album.
