Free Music Notes for SlipknotFree Music Review: Extreme nu-metal at its best Hit: 5 Stars
Slipknot is a band of unbridled destruction, unleashing a musical barrage of intensity that few bands can hope to match. They are an in-your-face, we don't give a damn about anybody, screw the world, group of nine very angry people. Each and every member of the band is intense through and through creating music that will make your ears bleed.Slipknot's music is extremely heavy dominated by a deadly combination of live drums, drum loops, and percussions accompanied by wicked guitar riffs, some really sick scratching and samples, and devasting bass, all of which comprised together to create some of the most intense and dominating nu-metal of the millenium. It is a mixture of death metal, thrash, aggro, and crossover with that distinct raw down-tuned sound that producer Ross Robinson has become famous for. The only problem with the music is that it is not really that creative or original, just intense. I figured that with nine members you would be able to create a lot of different sounds and accentuate your music. Lead singer Corey has a lot of anger within him which he unleashes with unbridled passion upon each and every song. Featuring a lot of screaming, hardcore singing, a bit of rapping, some softer singing, and a lot of cussing (which people seem to like), Corey delivers like a ten ton hammer. Not the most talented vocalist or songwriter but his passion and intensity makes up for that. The cd is intense throughout (with some lapses of nonsense) featuring great songs like "Wait and Bleed", a radio-friendly song with a bit of melody intertwined. "Spit it Out", "Only One", and "No Life" are songs that has some rap-metal influences. "(SIC)", "Liberate", "Purity", "Diluted", and "Scissors" are songs that just want to crush the listener into oblivion. Overall, an incredible cd and one of the hardest-hitting acts to have come out in a long time. Not the most talented or original band in the world, but definitely one of the most intense. See them live, but only if you can handle it. Other great hardcore bands: Chimaira, Mushroomhead, Hate Machine, Painface, 44, Machine Head, Dissolute, Vitamin F.

Critics don't even think about badmouthing the best cd ever.1) 742617000027- This intro contains excerpts from the Charlie Manson interview. Doesn't that rock?! 2) (SIC)- The Molt-Injected Mix on the 'Wait and Bleed' cd is good too so check that out. 3) Eyeless- I heard Slipknot got the lyrics from a mentally-disordered guy in New York who was screaming, "You can't see California without Marlin Brando's eyes". 4) Wait and Bleed- Corey's singing is so good and so is Sid's DJ-ing in this song. 5) Surfacing- This is our National Anthem so don't you ever degrade it. 6) Spit it Out- Wow, Corey's good at tongue twisters and he can amazingly sing at the same time! This song is so great and they made a music video to go with it which you can see on the 'Welcome to our Neighborhood" video. The video's based on the movie 'The Shining' and MTV banned it because of the violent baseball-bat scene between Corey and James. 7) Tattered & Torn- 'If you understand this song, then you understand the Clown' [ Shawn, creator of the song] 8) Me In Side- The spanish Corey sings is in regard to a spanish speaking member of Slipknot. 9) Liberate- A great song, also the live version is cool, available on the 'Left Behind' cd, which features the Left Behind Director's cut music video which you can see on the computer. 10) Prosthetics- This song is based on some movie they watched where a killer couldn't help himself but take this girl home with him and kill her. (apparently) 11) No Life- This song rules! You really have no life when you don't have freedom and everyone = s*** in this world. 12)Diluted- Great song that speaks for us all who had to undeservingly pay for something we never did. 13) Only One- The talk-singing parts in this song make it cool and the part where everyone screams 'only one of us walks away' totally rules. 14) Scissors- Joey Jordison wrote this song and its good especially towards the end when Corey goes nuts and screams till he gags. 15*) Guys, there's a hidden track if you keep track no. 14 on until about 13 minutes and 25 seconds. First you'll hear them talking in their locker room and then a song called 'Eeyore' runs. Hope this helps you.

This band have been my favourite since I was a pup in '99 and knew nothing about metal, and have remained so despite the broadening of my tastes and the gaining of knowledge that has erased so many bands from my collection. This has to have happened for a reason, and the reason is simple, its just such a damn good album! Lets take it song by song and sum each one up in a few words: 1) (sic) - sheer hell, can't hear much korn influence here. 3)eyeless - best track by far, contains the evilest breakdown ever and one which bands like irate and hatebreed have yet to better. 4)wait and bleed - has a nice drop at the end, the best of their singles 5) surfacing - very fast pedals, typical slipknot "stomping" song, chorus that proves no band on the planet conveys hate as well as they do. 6)spit it out - this song is whack, lets move on... 7)tattered and torn - this song is whack too, move on further... 8) me inside - fast pedals, nice melodic chorus, but "purity" was far better 9)liberate - nice and fast, im not too keen on it but its good live 10)prosthetics - this song is evil, nice change in pace, im still waiting for the korn influence to kick in, and personally im hearing some black metal in here. Great song. 11)No life - a song which contains rapping, bellowing and singing, nothing much stands out but its still a killer tune. 12)diluted - tune 13)only one - nice breakdown in here, has remained virtually in tact since "MFKR". 14)scissors - undoubtedly evil, great riff once it gets going, but ive only ever listened to all 8 minutes a couple of times as i tend to skip on to... 15)get this - ah. blastbeats. one of my favourites. mix of punk and grindcore, but retaining trademark slipknot anger. 16)eeyore - amazing. i have no idea why they hid this track cos its nothing to be embarassed about. blastbeats from hell, pedals. pure death grind here.overall - amazing album. Impossibly to place the band in any one genre cos to be honest, its all here - grind, death, punk, hardcore, melody. Proper good though. Buy this. Twice. Or three times in different formats like me.

Back in '99, when I was the assistant manager of a local music store, I would attend small club concerts of relatively unknown bands looking for new sounds to show my customers. I was lucky to attend a Slipknot show almost 3 months before this album was released and I was blown away. First of all, the energy the band possessed (and still possesses) amazed me. The music was tight, loud, and angry. They were strangely costumed, and loved to push the envelope on stage with regard to interaction, not just with band members, but with the audience as well. I walked away from that show determined to help promote this band in any way possible, feeling they deserved the fame that too many other bands receive without merit. About a month away from the release date, the representative from Roadrunner Records came into the store and I spoke with him about Slipknot. He gave me an advance copy of the CD and I played it in the store and in my car almost until the laser beam wore a hole in it. When the album was released I recommended it to anyone buying the latest "big" metal albums and very often received positive feedback about my choice. The reason is simple: the songs are great. Every track on the CD (I should say now I'm referring to the ORIGINAL version that includes "Frail Limb Nursery" and "Purity") deserves any and all praise it garners. From the opening scream of "(sic)" to the anguished screams in "Scissors" (not to mention the awesome hidden track "Eeyore") this album is everything metal bands wish they could pull off, and very few do. If you haven't heard of Slipknot, buy this album as an introduction to the sound. If you've only heard of them because of the MTV favorites of "Duality" and "Vermilion" buy this to see where all the fuss began.
After you buy Slipknot, Iowa, and Volume 3... Then get the DVD Disasterpieces for a decent picture of a Slipknot live show, avoid Live 9.0 unless you're a die-hard fan, and try to get a copy of Mate, Feed, Kill, Repeat only if you can afford it - it's a totally different sound (only 5 members remain, only 7 total on album) but worth owning just to say you have it... I do.
