Free Music Notes for One Chord to Another
Free Music Review: A pretty good pop underground album which has a couple flaws - only for genre fans - 4.5 stars

Sloan's "One Chord To Another" is a pretty good pop rock album (with a little lo-fi mixed in), but it does have several flaws. One is that one of the singers' voices isn't for everybody (though this is only for about half the album), and the other is that the album is a tad uneven (there are some "ok" songs mixed in with good and occasionally great ones). Sure there's standouts like "The Good In Everyone", "Everything You've Done Wrong" and "Can't Face Up", but the rest of the album isn't as good as those songs. The singer(s), even though they're not that good, ironically seems to fit the style of music. Musically it's pretty simple stuff - it's essentially your standard guitar, drums, bass and singer. The audio quality is a mixed bag - the instruments tend to be pretty clear, but the singer(s) sounds kind of fuzzy (perhaps this was what they were going for, but it seems unintentional). The songs tend to be pretty cheerful and somewhat interesting, but there isn't much depth to be found here. The band's saving grace is that there aren't any bad songs here, even if some of them are just "ok". Those 3 standouts bump this up from a "4" to a "4.5". Only pop rock fans will like this, however, I would still recommend it.

One Chord to Another Poster
Canada's Sloan open their third album, 1997's One Chord to Another, with a jagged rumble of guitars and drums that resolves into a groove and song, "The Good in Everyone," straight out of Something/Anything? As audacious a group of borrowers as Cheap Trick at their best, Sloan quickly line up evocations of Badfinger, George Harrison, and even Chicago. ("Everything You've Done Wrong" grafts the affectless vocal style of Peter Cetera to a track that patches together a half dozen moments from Help!, Revolver and Sgt. Pepper.)
