Free Music Review: The genius does it again.
Hit: 5 Stars

Have you ever wondered what the limits of creativity are? If so, don't ask Billy Corgan. He knows no limitations. _Adore_ is one of the most spectacular works of art ever produced. I couldn't imagine how they could top _Mellon Collie_; that album was so diverse, so vast in acoustic/stylistic scope that I really didn't expect anything better, ever. Corgan talked about bringing in more synthesizers on _Adore_, but I didn't think there would be much more to it than that. I didn't think it would be anything except the "change" he was looking for--a regression, perhaps, to Industrial music or, worse, '80s synth-sounds. But, man, was I ever wrong! _Adore_ transcends all expectations and conceptualizations. It takes a quantum leap in a new direction--bypassing any reasonable semblance of progression or gradual evolution. As Corgan says in the July '98 _Guitar World_, it is as though SP compressed five years of potential evolution into two or three; which for a band only ten years old is no small feat. And that, my friends, is the definition of creativity--something that _Adore_ is just brimming with. From the semi-soft, soul-soaring "To Sheila," "For Martha," and "Blank Page," to the real rawkers "Appels + Oranjes," "Perfect," and "Pug"--this album strikes at a level that no amount of expectations and idle conceptualizations could ever contrive. It strikes at the deepest level that true art ever can: the heart of the human spirit. And if you think I'm cloying it over here, gushing up the album ad nauseum, you obviously haven't really listened to it, have you?

Free Music Review: best cd ever

i didnt like this cd at first because i was still listening to standard rock like pearl jam, korn stuff, but i finally woke up one day and heard this album for what it really is...a masterpiece.
the songs are all perfect, starting out with, To Sheila, then going to the radio songs Ava Adore and Perfect, which sounds like similar to 1979, and the video is the sequal to it.
then comes Daphne Desends and Once Upon a Time, 2 other songs i think could of been on the radio. Daphne Desends is a synth-heavy gothic sounding sound, while Once Upon a Time is more of the Pumpkins poppy style song like you would of heard on MCATIS. Next comes Tear, the first Pumpkins song I have ever heard, and one of my all time favorite songs. Then Crestfallen, my favorite song on that cd. it is the most beautiflu song Billy Corgan has ever written. After that, Appels and Oranjes, which sounds to me like a Cure song. i think that would of made a good radio song also, but what do i know. Pug, the coolest sounding song the Pumpkins ever wrote is followed by The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete, a song that easily could of made it on to MCATIS. Annie-Dog is a good song to play with a band, if your into that sort of thing. Shame, the song Billy wrote to the late INXS singer, is also a personal favorite, with its wobbly sound. Behold! the Night Mare is the weirdest song on the cd, but also one of my favorite. For Martha is the most personal song Billy Corgan ever wrote, written about his late mother, and Blank Page is a great piano song with good lyrics. 17 is the last song, which is just 17 seconds of the b-side Blissed and Gone.

What a surprise. It's funny how a couple of years can put things in perspective. I didn't really become a pumpkins fan until somewhere between mellon collie and this album, so when it came out, I, like a lot of people, was excited to hear what the bound sounded like without Jimmy Chamberlain. But when I heard Adore, I was taken aback. It sounded totally pretentious, totally boring. Half of the album uses a drum machine, for crying out loud! The Smashing Pumpkins!

But the recent release of Machina sort of put things in perspective for me. In a sense, the two albums are different sides of the same coin, and together they become something pretty unlike anything I've ever heard before, but still pretty much the Pumpkins. I think I remember hearing that this was intended all along, but the band kinda downplayed it this time out because of Adore's slower sales. You can hear it in the synths and new-wavy effects that sort of drift in and out of the songs on both albums. And the approach to songwriting on this album: very much like Machina. Of course Machina is louder and the "rock" of the two, but I don't think you can do better than the melodies of Adore.

As with all Pumpkins albums, you get the feeling that if you could cut the fat, you'd have a perfect record. This is true of everything post-Siamese Dream I believe. But it's worth wading through Billy's Ego to hear this stuff, and besides, it's at its low point on this album. I know that years from now, people will realize what a great CD this was; it just kinda sucks that no one does today.

Free Music Review: This is an album many different kinds of people can enjoy.

Everyone seems to be saying that this is such a new direction for the pumpkins while it actually isn't. Their sound changes every album: strait out 70's rock on Gish, alternative depression on Simese Dream, art-rock on Mellon Collie. Adore is a natural progression of sound for the pumpkins. It is a great album that combines goth, rock, tecno, pop, and even a few ballads. Most bands seem to fit easily within one genre, yet the pumpkins, especially with Adore, combine so many different elements into the album that it has something for everyone. The catch is that usually when people try to have a lot of different genres within one album, it doesn't work out. Yet, the pumpkins combine a whole bunch of sounds that all seem to fit together beautifully. Adore is a great album that starts of with the acoustic To Shelia, then onto the dark, tecno/goth Ava Adore, through the pop of Perfect, daphne descends, and Once upon a time, over the darker Tear and Crestfallen and others, until Annie Dog and Shame which are both so different sounding and fresh that it does one good to hear it. (Corgan even brings back his trademark yowl for Shame) Near the end of the album is For martha, a ballad-y tribute to Corgan's mother. The Album ends with seventeen seconds of piano music that ends the second you start to get into it. Adore is beautiful. And least i should forget to mention, the whole album is filled with a great layering of sounds and instruments that makes the album, that already sounds great, even better on headphones. This is a brilliant album that all types of music lovers can enjoy.

Free Music Review: A Fresh Sound From an Old Friend
Hit: 5 Stars

Throughout their career as musicians, the Smashing Pumpkins have centered their sound around heavy, rifted guitars, singing about the dark side of love. In Adore, the band has taken a very brave step in creating an album that still has the same topic, but minus the heavy guitars. Billy Corgan still provides the Shakespearean style lyrics, but tones down the painful angst to a soft, calm, fresh note that really launches the c.d. off as a classic, unique idea by a rock band. I personally loved Adore, however, I will admit that it is a c.d. that takes a little getting used to. The meaning of the songs have plunged themself into a deep, dark wonderous adventure that in some verses, will make you laugh, cry, wonder, and be thankful for what you have. In my opinion, some of the most meaningful songs are those that are not well known, and don't have a video. These songs include 'Blank Page", "For Martha", and "Daphne Descends" which personally, I like better than "Ava Adore", or "Perfect", and I'm NOT saying those are bad songs or anything, its just that sometimes you have to look below the popular things to find the real gems, and thats what those tracks are, gems, along with every other song on this album, and every other album by the Smashing Pumpkins. The bottom line is that "Adore" is an album that deserves high praise and recognition, and any Pumpkins fan that does not have the c.d., go get it, and warm up to it, because its a fabulous piece of work, and I simply "adore" it.
