Free Music Notes for GishFree Music Review: The first kiss of what came to be great music Hit: 5 Stars
Thought it seems that most people do not enjoy the company of the Smashing Pumpkins first CD, I'd have to say that it is one of the best, and I place it in the top three of the best of their CD's. I do enjoy GISH very much, and never find myself reaching over to hit the "next track" button. All songs are very catchy, and the lyrics are profound! In one song, "SIVA", which I am sure you all know, Billy Corgan sings "Gather strength down in my heel/ and dig it in the world I peel". Now, THATS a message that surely speaks how he couldn't care less about himself, the world, or probably even his fans! GISH is bursting with indie hits, and I have never regretted purchasing this CD. If anything, I would have regretted NOT purchasing this CD. But then again, maybe it's just me, a crazy Pumpkins fan who is so completley obsessed that she has ALL of their albums, and enjoys them all to every last song, and plays their songs on the guitar. Yes, it seems that have no life, but to just simply worship the Smashing Pumpkins. Alright, back to my review, GISH is a GREAT CD! BUY IT!!!!!
Free Music Review: Corgan debuts in grand style Hit: 5 Stars
'Gish' kind of gets overlooked because of the insanely huge album that would follow it, but this is every bit as good as 'Siamese Dream.' It's mainly heavy rock, although in more of a psychedelic vein than anything else the Pumpkins have out. "I am One," "Siva," and "Tristessa" are delicious Pumpkins heavy-rock, though they're more jam-oriented than later outings. "Rhinoceros" is a lethargically paced ballad that explodes into insane guitar soloing at the end. "Window Paine" splits the difference between the two, beginning as the slowest song on 'Gish' and ending with 30 seconds of feedback noise. "Suffer" makes the Gothic heart of the Pumpkins just a bit clearer, with haunting guitars and a mysterious flute solo. "Crush" and "Daydream" are the album's two acoustic numbers, though done very differently. Despite the endless shrieking lead breaks, this is a very laid-back set, more candles-and-incense than anything. This is nowhere near the wall of sound that burst onto MTV two years later with "Cherub Rock." If you're OK with that, buy this right off.
Free Music Review: A good album, but not essential pumpkins Hit: 5 Stars
If you are a rabid pumpkins fan, then yes, go ahead and buy this if you don't already have it; it is a good pumpkins album and important for any collection.if you are a random music fan, or smashing pumpkin fan of non-rabid status, I would advise finding a way to preview some of the album first (through download or a friend's copy or whatever). While most of the songs are strong musically, they are more psychadelic than rock, with more of an 80's new wave than a 90's alternative rock. The album's singles are strong and provacative, such as "I am one", and the slow burning ballad rocker "rhinocerous", and most of the other songs are at least decent, more than just filler. I would recommend this album to those with an open mind who have heard other SP albums and are ready to explore more of the band, but if you are new to the band and prefer 90's alternative rock, I would strongly suggest their second album "Siamese dream" instead. This is a good album, but perhaps one of the last I would buy from this band.
Free Music Review: Simply Elegant Hit: 5 Stars
There should be a warning label on this album that reads: You will not be able to stop playing this album after starting it. The Pumpkins have been an obsession of mine for many years and I must say that this album is one of their best. The first four Pumpkin albums are immaculate but each have a different mood. Gish is the more mellow album. It sends you into a trance immediately with the pumping beats of Jimmy's drumming in "I Am One." "Bury Me," "Rhinoceros," and "Snail" can make you totally lose yourself, so watch out! Billy(and sometimes James) can lull you away with their beautiful lyrics and often help you through outcast adolescent troubles. This and their other albums helped me through many hard times and I'm sure that they have and can help others as well. I highly recommend this album for a first time buy or simply just collection. Buy this album and buy it now, whether you are a Pumpkins fan or not, because you more than likely have never heard any of these songs before.
Free Music Review: I should go... see you in June... Hit: 5 Stars
The debut of the Smashing Pumpkins. In my opinion, the greatest debut ever. This album is a psychadelic venture into the world of alternative rock, but it's slightly softer and a step above the usual alt. rock. SP showcase more of their harder tracks ("Bury Me," "Siva") and a few of their softest tracks of all time ("Rhinoceros," "Window Paine"). It all ends up as a stunning album with wonderful songs.I love this album to the fullest. Only a few things keep it from being my favorite Smashing Pumpkins album (that title is left to Siamese Dream). Although by now I've gotten used to it and rather like it, the redundant "She knows" in "Rhinoceros" ruined the song at first listen for me. The constant yelling of the word "flower" in "Snail" also kinda ruined that song. I still love this album, though. It's an amazing debut that no one should pass up.
