Free Music Notes for GishFree Music Review: Possibly as good as any Pumpkins album Hit: 5 Stars
I love how raw and hard this album is. It's absolutely my favorite album to listen to after a long day fighting the forces of white corporate opression -- and I mean LOUD. If there is an album to crank up your stereo to, this is it. It's not as polished as Siamese Dream, or as mature as Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, but it is undeniably Pumpkin, and has more energy per ounce than any of their albums. Some of the guitar and drum "soloettes" may make your ears bleed -- in the best possible way. The softer songs still hold some tension and have a tranquil, hypnotizing quality. Lie on the floor and close your eyes while you listen and you will see what I mean. Fnally, I think this album has great staying power; it really holds up well a decade later. This album is overlooked by many Pumpkins fans and it's a shame. If you like Siamese Dream, I don't think you could be unhappy with this CD.
Free Music Review: Before the ego landed... Hit: 5 Stars
By far, Gish is the best album from the Pumpkins. This album, like Siamese, was produced by Butch Vig (for all you Garbage listeners) and truly shows his skill in this one. Songs like "window paine" give you an idea of what Billy Corgan's soul was like before sold to rock-n-roll. Corgan has the "God" complex in all his albums, but this one gives you an idea what he thought before superstardom in "i am one". This album (to me) defines the early 90's alternative nation station, as much as the another hugely successful album produced by Butch Vig: Nevermind. Unfortunately, Gish never took off like the rocketship Siamese. To get a glimpse of Corgan and Associates before his rock rise to fame, listen to Gish and decide for yourself if these songs aren't just as pivotal to the now sound of "THE" Smashing Pumpkins.
Free Music Review: Simply a masterpiece Hit: 5 Stars
I was in a record store in Boise, ID back in 1992, looking for something to buy, and all the CDs that I was interested in were out of stock. All the while, there was this music playing on the store's sound system that, around the time "Rhinoceros" came up, had really gotten inside me. I started paying attention to it, and when the songs "Crush", "Suffer" and "Snail" played, I was mesmerized. This is one that stands the test of time. With apologies to all the diehard Pumpkin fans out there, I like everything they've done since this album, but nothing compares to "Gish" in the way it lifts me and carries me to another place. Drifting from one song to the next, the album holds together as one master work, painting an elaborate, psychedelic picture. I think it is one of the best rock albums of all time.
Free Music Review: A strong record from a strong songwriter. Hit: 5 Stars
The first Smashing Pumpkins record, when listened to by a late 90s audience, still lives up to the high standards of their newer work. It seems that at this time in his life, head Pumpkin Billy Corgan was more involved with heavy rock songs than with more touching and emotional works, (such as those found on "Siamease Dream" and "Mellon Collie") but strong hints of what was to come is present. "Suffer" and "Crush" are soft and melodic portents of future songs ("Luna" comes to mind), but the emphasis is on rock songs like "I Am One", "Siva", "Tristessa", and "Snail". These songs are well crafted and heavy hitting, which was their intended effect. A good listen, a must have for any Pumpkin fan, and a rock treat for those who haven't heard them.
Free Music Review: Gish will blow you away Hit: 5 Stars
I had been a Pumpkins fan for several years before I even heard Gish. I fell in love with the driving guitars and melodies of Siamese Dream (which i consider the best album of the 90's -by anyone) and the pure magic of Mellon Collie. When I finally heard this album I was amazed, not only at the quality of the music, but also by the fact that it is practically unknown to anyone besides hardcore SP fans. While the entire CD is solid, the first four songs are among the best Corgan has ever written. Siva and Bury Me contain some of the best guitar playing and drum beats I've ever heard and the multi-textured Rhinoceros is a reflection of the great range heard on their future albums. Even if you're not a big fan of the band, this album is a must have. It is a great work by the best rock band in recent history.
