Free Music Notes for Machina: The Machines of God

Free Music Review: As the curtain folds...forth comes another spectacular album
Hit: 5 Stars

Billy Corgan and "The Smashing Pumpkins" have created another beautiful peace of artwork filled with power chords, spiritual lyrics, and masterful sound. Their music brings intelligence to the rock genre much like the works of "Radiohead". If you want a CD that has been through the studio and back again and then back a bit more, then take a listen to "Machina". Though it runs a bit long, don't just listen to more infectious tunes such as "Stand Inside Your Love", "I of The Mourning" or "The Everlasting Gaze". Take some time out of your life to actually enjoy the entire album of music! The Pumpkins indulgence begins with the powerful and ear-pearcing track "The Everlasting Gaze." It opens to the drumming of Mr. Jimmy Chamberlin, who, on his recent return to the Pumpkins, taps to the beat with great authority behind his kit. In other words, he's letting the whole world know that a bit of the old Pumpkins has returned. This is indeed a great song to get anyones feet tapping and heads banging and there's even a surprise spoken section that cuts right about 3/4 through the track. Billy's clever words and delivery will undoubtedly keep you coming back for more than just a second listen. Track 2, "Raindrops + Sunshowers" will remind listeners of the past Adore sound that the Pumpkins achieved. Yet, their rock sound lums much more than their previous record. However, the soft vocals of Corgan remain. Track 3, "Stand Inside Your Love" is much like Corgan's hits such as "Today", "Thirty-Three", ect. It took him around 15 minutes to write and is an extremely uplifting and gorgeous song. It's one of my fav's on the entire album: Corgan's love song that rocks! Track 4, "I of The Mourning" is also wonderful. The catchy words of "cause my radio plays my favorite song/radio/radio...." along with a great tune engulfs listeners furthur into the Pumpkins dreamland. Next up is "The Sacred And Profane." A Little light hearted in my opinion. Good for just a breeze though if you're tackling the entire CD, but I really like the chorus: "You're all a part of me now." "Try, Try, Try," one of the singles off the album has an super beat and the opening line of "Pop Tart: What's our mission" through the words of Corgan is a fun listen. Somewhat uplifting as well. Heavy Metal Machine is a good track musically. Lyrically, it is somewhat lacking. The song's title is exactly the style of guitar: Metal and then some. Powerful and grand. "This Time" is another one of my fav's. It's sad and, as on the rest of the CD, speaks to all Pumpkin fans on a personal level. Billy's words will touch you as he describes the Pumpkins and their existence as of past and present. It's elluding to the fact that they will be departing too. )= Music plays out with the words perfectly. Proceeding it is "The Imploding Voice," a very fun song. "Everywhere you are, is everywhere you've been" explains Corgan. The guitar sounds are catchy in this track and the beat is nice. Next is the huge epic of the entire CD: "Glass and the Ghost Children." Done with quality, but it takes a while to get going. In between the music is an interlude where Billy sounds like he's being interviwed and his voice is fast-fowarded and rewound at different levels as he explains the voice in his head as messages of God. Listen all the way through! It's worth it. "Wound" was a track that came unexpectantly and I enjoyed it throughoutly. A great song if you are driving out in the middle of nowhere and gazing across the vast land. Relaxing ... "The Crying Tree of Mercury." Probably the least favorite track on this album for me. The tune drags on too long for me and the vocals are a bit annnoying. Not how they are written of course, but how they are sung. (sorry Billy). "With Every Light" is another uplifter, written in the prestegious Corgan style..."Look Ma, the Sun is shinin' on me" nice music flow as well. "Blue Skies Bring Tears" has been polished from earlier listenings I've heard of this song. It's nonetheless blossemed with the studio remastering. It's both soothing and soars. Lastly, "Age of Innocence" is my third favorite track. "We dismiss the backroads, drive these streets unafraid. Reason to scrap the pain, from our bones....desolation yes, hesitation no." Once again, as all his songs do, Corgan speaks on dozens of different levels for listeners. The music adds a nice subtle touch. Much like the icing on the cake. In closing, go out there and purchase "Machina". For any Pumpkin lover it is essential and for anyone new to the Pumpkins sound, it is one of their best! And remember : "Love will rule..it always does"~Billy Corgan

Hope this gave some insight! Enjoy! ~Space Pumpkin

Machina: The Machines of God Poster

Japanese version of 2000 release & follow up to 'Adore' Produced by Billy Corgan and Flood, the same team that produced 'Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness'. Includes the bonus track 'Speed Kills'. 2000 release. Standard jewel case.
With the doubters hovering round his band following the rock-is-dead pronouncement that preceded the flawed electronic dabblings of Adore, Machina finds Billy Corgan desperate to prove everyone, not least himself, wrong. On their fifth album, the Pumpkins attempt to reclaim the higher ground they dominated with the peerless Siamese Dream and the sprawling 28-track opus Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. As a result, they hit the ground running on Machina, exploding into life with "The Everlasting Gaze" and its firestorm of guitars and heavy metaphysical thunder. There are some quintessential Pumpkins moments here, notably "Stand Inside Your Love," which soars away on a spiraling guitar solo, and "Try, Try, Try," which taps into Corgan's ever-present melancholy. At 73 minutes long, Machina overstays its welcome, beginning to flag, ironically, at the self-aggrandizing "Heavy Metal Machine." No matter--the Pumpkins have made their point with brutal grace. --Mike Pattenden
