Free Music Review: MCIS!!
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not one to write these reviews, but JEEEZ... this album is too freaking great. I spend too many two hour blocks just listening to MCIS and this time I thought, why not write a review while it's playing? Great idea huh?

What I like most about these songs are that you start listening to them and then you think that they are great... then somewhere in the middle of the song Billy pulls out these fantastic new melodies or guitar solos that just blow your mind and you have a whole new appreciation for the song. Here are reviews + some highlights (my track times should be universal right?)...

Dawn to Dusk
MCIS - 7/10 - listen to the whole thing. Will prepare your mind. If you don't listen to it first, you will blow up.
Tonight Tonight - 20/10 - Favorite song EVER!!! oh man. You have to listen to the whole song, or I will come over there and put my stereo outside your house and blast it.
Jellybelly - 6/10 - Exactly what I was talking about in my intro. Decent song at first, but then it gets genious... 2:04-2:36
Zero - 5/10 - I don't mean to invoke wrath, but overall unmelodic song. Some parts VERY catchy, though. And of course, I was right again, there is some genious in it... 1:37-1:52
Here is No Why - 9/10 - I didn't really hear this on the radio that much, but it's definitely radio-worthy. Good overall song, but chorus is rocking, and guitar solo is one of the best... 2:24-3:29
BWBW - 8/10 - This song is great, though admittedly I think it is a bit, a BIT only, a bit repetitive. 0:00-0:04 (The world is a vampire.. da na na nah na na) of course is a must listen. Otherwise, the freakout at the end is great... 3:38-4:16
To Forgive - 6/10 - Not a must listen, but a decent song. No standout parts :-(
FU (An Ode to No One) - 7/10 - Oh man... at first I kinda hated this song. Then now I still kinda dislike the beginning, but the verses got better, and the ending is brilliant... when he starts screaming "no way!! I don't need it!"... must listen... 3:26-3:48. "NO WAY!!" Ok, listen to it again.... 4:04-4:25
Love - 5/10 - EH... you know how when you listen to great albums you don't want to skip any songs? Love is definitely good enough to not skip when you are listening to MCIS.
Cupid de Locke - 3/10 - um.... this is pushing it. I can't seem to get a hold of this song. It's just that Billy sounds kinda... um... fruity... Others seem to like it, so hopefully the rest of you are not cursed with disliking a Smashing Pumpkins song like I am :-( Oh yeah, and what's with talking during songs?? It's like Boys II Men :-)
Galapagos - 8/10 - Beautiful! Beginning is kind of slow, but it is all made up at the end. I think everyone will agree with me in... 3:20-3:57
Muzzle - 7/10 - I know this is a good song, but I don't play it as much as other songs for some reason. One of those songs that you say 'man what a great song' when you listen to it but when you are choosing a favorite song or songs the name doesn't pop up... no track selection as it's pretty evenly good all through.
Porcelina of the Vast Oceans - 10/10 - YES!! An epic! Cutting out the first two minutes and the last, this song is one of those long songs (making it 6 minutes) that never get boring, and sound as long as a regular song (yay Hummer!). I wish those three minutes weren't there, it's like Where the Streets Have No Name by U2, if you know what I'm talking about. But you still see the 10/10 don't you?!! Pure genious and great guitars... 6:21-7:28
Take Me Down - 4/10 - Billy throwing poor James a bone? Man that was kind of mean huh? Sorry James for that - I appreciate your work and your help in writing Soma/Mayonaise (both spectacular), but this wasn't a good song, not even if Billy sang it. Well.. it wouldn't fit Billy's voice in the first place, but still it's the song and not you, James, you can rock on!

Whew... ok take your pulse. If not beating, I guess you'd better stop for now. Otherwise, listen to Tonight Tonight again, drink some water, and get ready for more :-)

You didn't listen to Tonight Tonight again did you? Pfftt. Whatever man. Anyways, here's your chance to do it.

Twilight to Starlight
Where Boys Fear to Tread - 5/10 - Not the most pleasant sounding song, but decent intro... 0:28-1:21. Sadly it ends without that spark of genious to blow our minds.
Bodies - 8/10 - Heh heh.. but this song CERTAINLY does. Beginning is good. From midway into the song until the end is one of the best Billy Corgan freakouts ever!... 2:50-4:02 (freaking does not start til 3:20)
Thirty-Three - 8/10 - This was one of my fav songs at first, but now it's just a 'very good' song. No standout parts, but that doesn't mean anything bad, some songs just don't have any parts that stand OUT.
In the Arms of Sleep - 9/10 - I really like this song. I really really do. Very melodic and a song that you can just keep on listening to. It's also a slow song, and I keep on telling myself it's just a phase, as most slow songs get boring after a while, but this remains a regular playback... 2:00-2:25 "And I'll always need her more than she could ever need me" is a great line. Not that I identify with that.. i really don't.. Heh heh... no way man... :-)
1979 - 10/10 - Duh... how could you not like this song? It is too bloody catchy!! No track selection. It wouldn't matter anyways, once you get to 0:05 you are going to be 'screw the online stranger i'm going to listen to the whole bloody thing' And you better....
Tales of A Scorched Earth - 4/10 - A lot of people on forums and stuff say this is the song out of them all they would take out of MCIS. I can see why, but like Love I can still listen to the whole song without reaching for the skip button... maybe. If I'm feeling good.
Thru the Eyes of Ruby - 10/10 - Another brilliant lengthy one! Except they cut out any filler, even the ending has this nice melodic part which could probably be another song of it's own. But of course Billy has so many melodies in his head he can spare one for a 30-second ending. The track selection is definitely definitely the part where he starts screaming "the night has come to hold us young" 4:36-5:30
Stumbleine - 7/10 - Something about the word stumbleine that has an excellent meaning to it. What does it mean? I don't really know, but something good. No standout parts. See Thirty-Three for 'good songs but no standout parts' explanation.
XYU - 8/10 - Usually I don't like songs like these, but there is something about this song that strikes me. It's beat, or lyrics, or just general Billy screaming I guess. Could be a 5:00 song probably, but is seven... 4:55-5:26
We Only Come Out At Night - 9/10 - According to the fan database, this song is ranked like 90th, which is understandable, but I like it a lot because it is catchy and a feel good song. A great beginning of the end of MCIS.. get your tissues out :-).... 2:45-3:16
Beautiful - 7/10 - A good song.. it fits. Some say beautiful, though I am not inclined to agree or disagree... 3:29-3:52
Lily (My One and Only) - 7/10 - Wow, a song you can actually catch all the lyrics to. And it tells a funny story too :-) No track selection... you probably need to listen to the whole song to get the whole jist of it. Shows how amazing Billy is, to be able to come up with all that other stuff, and then a song like this...
By Starlight - 7/10 - These are all getting 7's because on their own I probably wouldn't listen to them. But on the CD it just freaking FITS! Once you get here if you have been listening to all the songs you definitely won't skip this.
Farewell and Goodnight - 8/10 - Eight of ten?? As I said, listen to this alone and you'll be like what the heck? But in the CD, this will put you in tears. Just too good. Hail Billy. Listen to the whole bloody thing.

*sob that's it. Anyways, you all have just witnessed another 'best two hours of my life' :-)

Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness Poster

SMASHING PUMPKINS Mellon Collie & The Infinite Sadness (1995 US 28-track PICTURE DISC 2-CD album set including Tonight Tonight Bullet With Butterfly Wings and Thirty Three presented in a thick jewel case picture sleeve with deletion saw cut inthe spine)
Emotionally over-the-top pop extravaganzas like the string-swelling "Tonight Tonight," the Metallica-influenced alternative rock of "Zero," the techno via new wave of "1979"--the 28 songs on this swell two-disc album are as eclectic as their themes are epic and ambitious. Billy Corgan's thin whine isn't much of an instrument, but he makes the most of it by writing smart songs that take emotional chances that more-typical alt rockers would deem uncool. Pessimistic and feeling trapped but still wanting to believe in love, in a future, in something--this is the sound of Gen X at the millennium, with all the self-indulgence and power that would suggest. --David Cantwell
