Free Music Notes for Siamese DreamFree Music Review: A True Trancendental Experience Hit: 5 Stars
Absolutely mindblowing. The sonic landscapes displayed here on this masterpeice have yet to be matched by anyone since. When I hear this, the atmospheres bring to mind bands like My Bloody Valentine, the complex prog-rock tendencies bring to mind bands like Yes/King Crimson/ELP, the piercing, ringing solos bring to mind Hendrix, as many other influences ring throughout the magnificent opus this is Siamese Dream. Yet they can pull all of this off and still remain sounding very real and NOT pretentious at all. The songwriting is highly profilic and Billy throws in some amazing arrangements which, at times, can bring tears to one's eyes. I HIGHLY recommend playing this album with a nice stereo system and speakers VERY LOUD, in the dark and just burying yourself in the emotions for a while and become immersed in all of the rich sounds and textures. It's unlike any other album i've heard. It's most certainly a milestone in rock music, comparable to MBV's Loveless. I normally don't discuss albums in the sense of being a trancendental experience, but believe me, this definaly qualifies. If you know what's good for you, you'll buy this album and listen to it as it's meant to be heard...all the way through, and to be played countless times over the years. This is the music that changes people's lives. If the first listen leaves you perplexed or confused, it might take a few listened to truly get it. All of Smashing Pumpkin's albums take some time to fully apreciate and understand as a work of art.
Free Music Review: "Freak out, and give in..." Hit: 5 Stars
The Smashing Pumpkins WERE 90's music for me. Inventive, epic and oh-so prolific, the band (mostly Billy Corgan) really introduced me to the wide scope of rock music (classical and angst CAN work!) At the time of Mellon Collie, I thought that was the greatest album ever, if only because it was so widely ambitious...well many years have passed since those teen years and since the band broke up, and the fractured (though still often divine) Mellon Collie doesn't hold together as well. Happily, Siamese Dream does.Siamese Dream is the best of all the pumpkins albums. First off, and most importantly, this collection of songs is stellar. Every one is a unique classic; either a textured symphony or a killer blast. Corgan is at his songwriting peak; writing surprisingly introspective and very honest lyrics. And the album as a whole- this is how it should be done! The disc is a musical journey all to itself, with HUGELY varied sounds, approaches, rythms...I just love the closing dream pop segue on "Hummer," and how it contrasts with, say, the guitar/jungle beat explosion that opens silver****. Corgan and the band would attempt to topple this mighty album with "EVEN BIGGER"- the subsequent Mellon Collie. And when Adore failed to spark (undeservedly), Machina attempted to be...well colossal. On Siamese Dream, these pretentions don't even enter into it; the music isn't under pressure, and- partially due to this- it's even more mind-blowing. Check it out; it's a mighty terrific record.
Free Music Review: The Smashing Pumpkins at their best Hit: 5 Stars
I would think that most Smashing Pumpkin fans consider "Siamese Dream" the band's finest and most consistent album. It's not all that different than "Gish," just an improvement in every way. The instrumental work, lyrics, and overall song quality are quite extraordinary. As everyone knows, probably the most remarkable thing about the band (Billy Corgan really, since he writes almost all of the songs by himself) is their ability to rock hard, play soft, and even become theatrical, sometimes all in the same song.
Three of my favorite hard rocking Pumpkin classics are "Cherub Rock," "Quiet," and "Geek U.S.A." -- just perfect songs with that signature thrumming bass and rhythm guitar sound, and the relentless Jimmy Chamberlin on drums. "Today" proves that Corgan can pen a more pop-oriented hit when he wants to. "Disarm," probably one of the band's best songs, showcases Corgan's theatrical proclivities, almost bombastic at times (we would hear much more of this style on the band's next album). Other (perhaps less obvious) standouts are "Rocket" and "Mayonaise."
My only criticism of "Siamese Dream" concerns the songs "Hummer" and "Silverf***" both of which go on for too long. The latter, in fact, could have been a much better straightforward four minute rocker. But these are minor quibbles of what is otherwise an all-time classic album. I only wish the Pumpkins had maintained their high quality for a longer period of time.
Free Music Review: One word: classic Hit: 5 Stars
Having always been a Smashing Pumpkins fan, when ever the words "mellon collie" or "siamese" or "gish" etc are mentioned around me, i naturally think of Billy Corgan, James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and D'arcy. However, I would have to say that I did overplay them a bit when I was younger. So, for about a year, this record, along with the every other Smashing Pumpkins album ever mass produced, sat on my shelves, and gathered dust. After reading Spin Magazine's Top 100 Albums Of The Last 20 Years, I was reminded of what an impact Siamese Dream had on my life. And not just mine, but all my friends' lives. And not just my friends' lives, but everybody who had ever been lucky enough to hear "Cherub Rock" through "Luna." I quickly went and found the dusty album, turned up the volume, sat down on my couch, and let it play. What was I thinking? How could I have not touched this album, or any other genius Smashing Pumpkins work, for atleast an entire year?! My initial thoughts upon hearing this album for the first time, ever: "Whoa......these guys are AWESOME."
Between the classic "Cherub Rock," the intimidating "Today," the emotional "Disarm," and the bipolar and moody (but still good) "Silverf***," this album can be loved by anyone. If you're just getting into the Smashing Pumpkins, I DEFINITLY recommend this masterpiece. If you love the band, but don't have the record, what are you thinking?! Buy it, NOW!
Free Music Review: Siamese Dream is better then all the rest Hit: 5 Stars
This album has got to be one of the best album's of the 90's, and as we leave this century, and this mellenium for the new one, i'll alway's remember this album as an absolute turning point in my life. (sob-sob ;( ) (LOL) but seriously, when i think back on the 90's and band's like nirvana, pearl jam, metallica, green day and the smashing pumpkins cross my mind, i think what album affected me most, what will i remember about the 90's the most beside's the great historical event's that happened, i'll think of the great music, and siamese dream is the first thing that pop's into my head. I started listening to the smashing pumpkins when i was 14 and a bit lonely, I'm 19 now and happier then i've ever been. the song's lyrics say alot for the band, and our generation, and the lead singer Billy Corgan's life, which in some way's was played out by many teen's who listened to his album, and it proved that were living in the 90's, not the 50's where everything was perfect. And so what if there's 1 or 2 word's in there that are objectionable, i'll be very proude one day if my kid's love the smashing pumpkins as much as I do. and as we generation X'ers grow up into the yuppies our parent's became, I can honestly live with the fact that this generation did more and saw more then some generations, and that is why i think this generation, our generatoin, is the best, and I think siamese dream got us there. ;)
