Free Music Review: Thought I should
Hit: 5 Stars

Been listening to this a lot lately, so its time to chime in. THis is undoubtedly the Smashing Pumpkins best work. Mellon Collie, while not short on excellent songs, was long on filler, and lacked the shimmery guitar bliss that is Butch Vig's production. No one seems to mention his contribution to this album, but producers rarely get credit anyway. His extremely hard yet entirely accessible production gave this album the pop listenability that it needed to reach a large audience, but not at the expense of the hard rock ... that Corgan was so good at. That said, Corgan is a guitar solo master, blasting out mindblowing fret work all over the place. I was never a fan of his lyrics, too angsty and overwrought for me. So I think its wise that he lets them sit just underneath the guitar madness. Only letting them come up for a brief poetic line in the slow songs. And while I'm on the slow songs, I always wanted Sweet Sweet to go on longer, its the most beautiful song on the album by far to me, and I wanted it fleshed out, I don't know what happened with this. Although I guess I got a whole album of this on Adore. But in terms of rocking hard without being vapid it doesn't get much better than this, Cherub Rock and Today are just classics. Soma, Mayonaise, and Hummer are wonderous epics. Its all here. Someone should tell the current batch of "metalheads" that its not shameful to be pop. Ask Corgan.

Free Music Review: The second comming
Hit: 5 Stars

Armed with sabathesque cruching guitars, a deep rumbling bass, thumping drums and of corse Billy Corgans rasping vocals, 'Siamese Dream' is perhaps the Smashing Pumpkins most consistent and focused record. From the marching band drum roll that kicks off 'Cherub Rock' to the dreamy lullaby like 'Luna' the second offering from the Pumpkins paints a vision of growing up in the USA. Taking stabs at everything from being cool, romanticised relationships, depression and just plain old boredom, this is Corgan's statement about well everything in life almost.

Lyrically 'Siamese Dream' is the most caustic, sarcastic, tongue in cheeck record that the band would ever offer. Though angsty, its a sneering, eye rolling angst on display, no wallowing self pity that would creep into to later songs. And the lyrics are matched by the inventive riffs and melodies which pervade the proceedings. A mixture of 80's post punk/indie intensity and of classic rocks heaviness and granduer, though hardly a revaltion in a world that was at the peak of the grunge surge, the Pumpkins definately deliver it in their own unique style.

'Siamese Dream' is probably one of those records all teenages should own as they grow up. Perhaps you won't always see it as the greatest record ever made, but it will certaintly always be a brilliant album that speaks volumes about those difficult years everyone goes through.

Free Music Review: The album that kept me going
Hit: 5 Stars

When this album came out, I had nothing going for me. I'd given up on guitar, I had no friends, my only true friend (grandfather) had died...and I felt like joining him on the other side at age 17. And then...I was watching 120 Minutes on MTV (anyone else remember when that show was actually GOOD?) and they announced a new Smashing Pumpkins video. I'd heard a couple songs from their debut GISH, actually heard 'em cos I saw their videos on the same program, and liked them but for whatever reason never picked the album up. Anyway that video was for "Cherub Rock" and man, I was hooked. I knew what I wanted to do. I wanted to pick up guitar again, I wanted to blend classic rock style riffs with disillusioned lyrics, I wanted to touch in others the same nerve Billy Corgan had touched in me. As time went on I read up on Billy and it seemed his childhood had been similar to mine. Also his suicidal feelings...just everything about the guy echoed moments in my life. And his songs helped me through lonely lonely times. That's why I was so mad, 'cos when they broke up some douche bag DJ was saying "oh yeah the Pumpkins are breaking up, I've gone thru 2 boxes of Kleeenex and I need to call my therapist." Jak-off. Screw him. This was the band that kept me alive through some deep dark suicidal years, and if I met Billy I would never be able to thank him enough.

Free Music Review: Billy Corgan and His Way
Hit: 5 Stars

I have not been on the Smashing Pumpkins bandwagon for long. I missed the albums when they first hit; hell, the first song I heard by them was "Tonight, Tonight" from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness. Needless to say, I had some catching up to do. Thankfully, that catching up included listening to this album, which I now consider a seminal/pivotal/simply amazing point in rock history. Billy Corgan does away with pretension by twisting it into glorious rock anthems and beautiful alt-pop. The kicker is that, while people wrote them off as depressionists, almost every moment on this CD can be compared with euphoric joy. Even in moments of rage, the beauty of the music shines through. Straight-out rockers such as "Geek U.S.A." and "Quiet" are singular yet grand in their guitar riffs, creating a near-primal feeling. Softer numbers such as "Spaceboy", "Disarm", and "Mayonaise" cause reflection and introspection on the listener's part, creating a more balanced record. The true killers on this album, though, are "Today' and "Soma". The first is the most melodic alternative rock ever written, while the second is the most sobering alt-rock ever written. In closing, while the Pumpkins may not be sure who they are anymore, I'll always love them for who they were.

Free Music Review: A 90's Rock Album That Deserves 5 Stars.
Hit: 5 Stars

From start (Cherub Rock and the distorted guitar of James Iha) to finish (Luna, a laid-back melodrama), Siamese Dream is an incredible album.

When people think of "alterna-rock", the first album that comes to their mind is Nirvana's "Nevermind". Not to take anything away from that masterpiece, but Siamese Dream, musically, against Nevermind (without the whole Kurt Cobain mystique) is one step ahead and beyond. Just to note, these two were both producer by Butch Vig, the premier Alt-Rock producer.

This album is up there with ALL of the great Rock albums of all-time, and this is in all complete honesty and truth without biased. Siamese Dream is comparable with Led Zeppelin's IV, or AC/DC's Highway to Hell.

It's packed with some incredibly catchy guitar riffs of James Iha (See "Geek U.S.A."; "Cherub Rock"), and incredibly catchy songs in general (See "Today", "Rocket", "Quiet", etc.). The drumming of Jimmy Chamberlain is also extremely powerful throughout this album. The angst of Billy Corgan's voice and lyrics seem to accompany the sounds of the instruments just perfectly.

To put it simply, Siamese Dream is a emotional rollercoaster in both lyrics, and in instruments, and it just sounds so sweet to the ears. A must have for any Rock fan, but also a must have for any music fan.
