Free Music Review: Classic, Pure and Simple
Hit: 5 Stars

The Pumpkins' follow-up to GISH is right up there with AENIMA and OK COMPUTER as one of the top five albums of the 1990's. From the album's five-star average you can probably surmise that this is an exceptionally good record, so I won't spend any time raving. Even despite Billy's unusual (if at times annoying) vocals, the sheer power and range of this music, which remains very melodic and well-written at all times, shoves NEVERMIND, TEN, and possibly even DIRT out of the way as the best Grunge-era album.

The main singles from this album are "Today" and "Disarm." While both great songs (well, at least the former), they are easily outshined by several other tracks. I'd have to say "Mayonnaise" (Track 9) is by far the best Smashing Pumpkins song ever released; if you're looking for one track to download to sample the album before buying, make sure this is it. "Hummer" is not far behind; that section between about 4:30 and 5:30 ("Ask yourself a question...") somehow sends chills down my spine every time. Other five-star tracks include "Cherub Rock," "Quiet," "Soma" and "Luna."

All in all, this is the high point of the Pumpkins' career, as it manages to expand greatly upon GISH but avoid the tedious experimental sounds found from this point on. The five-star average ought to say something; even classic records like AENIMA cannot pull this off. The bottom line is that this, one of the best rock releases of all time, defined the alt-rock sound of the 1990's and performed it better than any of the copycats, and manages to be both accessible and deep. Don't hesitate to pick up a copy if you're a fan of any type of rock music.

Free Music Review: THE MOST PERFECT OF THINGS
Hit: 5 Stars

Forget the "alternative" tag the media saddled this band with. This is a Rock album, through and through. But it's not the dumbed-down "rawk and rooolll" of the seventies ( thinking of Nugent, Meatloaf etc ) or the dreadful hair metal / glam rock rip off of the Eighties ( Poison, Ratt, et al). Even though they take inspiration from many sources, like prog rock, heavy riff rock, punk rock and new wave, the Smashing Pumpkins were at their root just a great rock band, and I think this is their best album. One I can put on and not have to worry about skipping anything, or programming my cd player. One great tune after another. Many different moods. Some songs are trippy, reminding me of early period Pink Floyd, some songs remind me of Led Zeppelin, with super heavy guitar riffs. But the songwriting is pure Billy Corgan, one of the best writers of my generation. Pure songwriting genius, no doubt about it. Kudos must also go to producer Butch Vig, who got incredible vocal and instrumental performances out of this band ( although I am told Billy did most of the bass and guitar work himself, and his bandmates played the live shows - this type of autonomy can be seen as some as ego, I see it more as quality control, even though it ultimately tore this band apart.) This is without a doubt one of the best - if not THE BEST - rock albums of the last 25 years. The best place for casual or curious fans to start. The follow up to Siamese Dream, the double disc Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, is a bit much to digest in one sitting, although it contains some great songs as well, and is slightly more varied in approach.

Free Music Review: Who is righteous, what is bold... so I'm told...
Hit: 5 Stars

As the drums of "Cherub Rock" start pounding, you know you're in for a wild ride, and the Pumpkins will be your tour guides. While not as much of a psychadelic venture as "Gish," this is more of a musical adventure. You'll end up at the true heart of music, and you'll never want to leave again.

There's too much to be said about this album. Billy Corgan and his genius songwriting make this album more appreciated than it needs to be. This is a band that will forever make it's mark in history. Not a single day goes by without me listening to "Cherub Rock" or "Today" or any other song on Siamese Dream. They are all masterpieces. The majority of the songs are radio-friendly, but who cares? They're all wonderful songs that should be a part of any avid music fan's collection.

With that said, you need to realize that if you do not click "buy now" within the next 5 minutes, you've just lost whatever 5 minutes you could have spent listening to the beginning of this record. This is the best album of the '90s, and in my opinion, the best album of all time. Nothing in my collection has topped it. The Smashing Pumpkins were always one step ahead of the rest of my music, and their music always deserves a special place in my heart.

With melodic rock songs like "Today" or mellow yet uplifting songs like "Mayonaise," this album is something you should not pass up on buying. It is a triumph in music and anything else closely related to music. So go ahead, click "Buy Now." I promise you won't regret it.

Free Music Review: PERFECT FROM START TO FINISH
Hit: 5 Stars

I don't think this album could have been any better. Heavy distortion, crazy high-pitched solos, and loud pounding drums all come together perfectly for 13 amazing songs. There is not one song on this cd that I can skip over, it's just incredible.

Cherub rock - a great start to the album, full of energy and i really love the drums and the solo is pretty much legendary
Quiet - one of my favorites it's really low and heavy, another great solo
Today - played on the radio a lot, great song
Hummer - "life's a bummer when you're a hummer" , great song
Rocket - wow another great song
Disarm - also played on the radio a lot, sad acoustic song about billy's childhood
Soma - very sad song with a really passionate solo in the middle
Geek USA - i'm pretty sure it's about cocaine which explains the crazy guitar solo (ranked 54th on guitar world's 100 greatest solos by the way), real catchy song
Mayonaise - i don't understand why this wasn't a single because it is one of the best songs on the cd
Spaceboy - great slow song about billy and his brother
Silverf*ck - starts out fast then gets slow, really long song but not boring
Sweet Sweet - really short song but very powerful, one of my favorites
Luna - slow love song, very soothing, a good way to end a perfect album

So i highly recommend this cd and even though billy's voice is kind of annoying, if you get past that and give it a few listens, you will discover just how good this cd is. I think this could be the best alt. rock cd ever made, or at least in the top 5.

Free Music Review: What happens when you listen
Hit: 5 Stars

Most people who recognize the name smashing pumpkins but are not fans immediately equate them with the irritating screaming whine of the lead singer billy corgan. I admit I too had such thoughts, however with some coercing from a friend and a newly opened mind I gave the band a chance.

The key is this, listen to what is going on behind the lead singer. Turn to "mayonaise" (with headphones on preferably), sit back, and listen to everything that is happening. If compelled to, listen again and I guarantee you will find twice as much hidden there. Pick any given song and try and individually pick out instraments. You will soon come to realize that every single member of this band, every single layer is full of heart soul and incredably skillful playing.

As an album this is the first smashing pumpkins album I suggest you get. It has some good singles (today and disarm) as well as incredably soft and sweet songs (such as spaceboy and luna). If you take the time to listen to the whole album from front to back, you will realize there is not one bad song within the 13 tracks.

If you are able to listen to the album in relation to the entire band and the songs in their entirety, perhaps you will come to realize that the lead singer's voice isn't really annoying. You may realize as I did that it is actually very fitting, and belongs there in the same way as every other instrument in these layered songs.

I urge you to look past the surface of this band and really give them a chance. This band has the power to touch people in ways that most bands don't even take the time to try.
