Free Music Notes for Zeitgeist

Free Music Review: Excellent Systems Only
Hit: 5 Stars

First, I've been a Pumpkins fan since the release of Gish in '91. I've seen them in concert 11 times. I saw Zwan once. Needless to say, I'm a big Corgan fan. I'm a huge Jimmy fan - no other drummer can bring it as hard and heavy as Jimmy. Adore was a really good album but Jimmy's absence was obvious. As far as Zeitgeist, the first and most important thing to know, in my opinion, is that this must be listened to on a great home system with 2 speakers plus a sub (or if it's a really nice system with 5 or 7 speakers put it on "stereo" and not some surround mode) or on a great set of headphones. When I first listened to the CD a couple days ago in my car which has seven speakers but is still a stock stereo system, the mix sounded odd. The vocals almost seemed to be easily distinguishable and disconnected from the instrumentals. I felt it lacked the vocal passion of other Pumpkins releases - I couldn't put my finger on it really. Once I listened to it on my home system and especially on headphones, it felt totally different. The vocals felt like they were immersed in the pulsating guitars and drums. I became totally sold when I heard it this way. I'm not a tech guy so I can't explain why but it's just a different experience with two speakers and a sub so avoid subpar systems if you want to hear this CD like it should be heard. These songs will clearly rock in concert and I'm absolutely there. One thing you won't get on this cd is the screaming growl we've come to know from Billy - "despite all my rage" (I wonder if maybe this was by design to make it possible for aging vocal chords to handle a world tour). Nonetheless, these songs absolutely bring it.

1. Doomsday Clock - The only way they could have started a Pumpkin comeback CD. Jimmy kicks a** on this hard and heavy song that is part Mellon Collie, part Machina, part Gish (tinny guitars in parts), part more modern rock offerings (the chorus).

2. 7 Shades of Black - This sounds like an updated Bodies (disc 2 mellon collie) with more melody. Rocks hard. Very good.

3. Bleeding the Orchid - This song sounds like an Adore song with what Adore was missing - Jimmy! It has the same passion in the lyrics and vocals as Adore but it's complemented with great drumming that will have you doing the head bob :) and some heavier guitars. Great song.

4. That's the way (My Love is) - This definitely feels Zwan-like. And all those out there who hate Zwan because it's "upbeat" take off your black clothes for a day and enjoy some positive energy. Excellent song.

5. Tarantula - Kill it, Billy! This song is definitive Pumpkins. In the end, Billy's layering of unbelievable guitar tracks is what has made the Smashing Pumpkins great. This song has it all - screaming guitars, pulse-pounding drumming, screeching vocals, and even a pure Gish interlude - though brief it brings back memories. Awesome song.

6. Starz - This, to me, is like a totally new style of song for the Pumpkins. It's a really good song that rocks with a great melody and some killer drumming by Jimmy. I really enjoy this song.

7. United States - Talk about a tune built for a concert. It's a 9-minute ode to hard guitars and drumming. It's definitely not Silverfu**, Geek U.S.A. , Soma, Tristessa, or Porcelina but I can't wait to hear it live!

8. Neverlost - Very much an Adore feel. Kind of like Crestfallen. It's a sweet song and a good listen.

9. Death from Above - This is the bonus song on the Best Buy CD. I'm so glad I bought this CD because I love this song. It's uplifting, beautiful, Adore meets Zwan. I can't get enough of this great song. It has everything I love about Billy Corgan combined with great Chamberlin drums. It's like The Tale of Dusty and Pistol Pete (a song of personal significance to me) with a beat that just gets me feeling like I can't wait to start the day.

10. Bring the Light - Has the Siamese Dream guitar sound with Zwan-like vocals and upbeat melody. Another good song.

11. (Come On) Let's Go! - Feels like another great Mellon Collie song. It's a little more upbeat than most Mellon Collie songs but still has that same guitar and drum sound familiar to that album. Excellent.

12. For God and Country - I feel like Billy is really invested in this song personally but it's just an OK song. It will probably be that one song on this CD that I hit the skip button on. Listenable but not great.

13. Pomp and Circumstances - This song reminds me very much of the great songs from Mellon Collie like Galapogos, We Only Come Out at Night, Beautiful, By Starlight, and Farewell and Goodnight. A great song that I also can't wait to hear live.

14. Stellar - This is the bonus song from iTunes. An excellent song in the Adore style with great melody and passion. The guitars are at times haunting. Close your eyes during this one.

Overall, I'd rate Zeitgeist 4th on my Pumpkins best list (which means it's a GREAT album. My order would be Siamese Dream, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, Gish, Zeitgeist, Adore, Mary Star of the Sea (Zwan but still Billy and Jimmy), Pisces Iscariot (basically a b-side ablum but full of great songs), The Aeroplane Flies High (a box set of singles with b-sides but with some great songs including the awesome "Cherry" and "Meladori Magpie", Machina (A few classics - Stand Inside Your Love is an all-time great - but too many so so songs), The Future Embrace (Billy's solo effort is a really enjoyable listen but not much more than that save the great "ToLoveSomebody" recorded with Robert Smith of The Cure). Make sure you give this album seveal listens before deciding on how you feel about it. It just gets better and better each time through. Enjoy!

Zeitgeist Poster

The Smashing Pumpkins are back! After seven years, the acclaimed Pumpkins have returned with Zeitgeist. Featuring the single "Tarantula," this new sound is not to be missed.
Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. This is a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski
