Free Music Notes for Zeitgeist

Free Music Review: Well... Sonically it's pretty close to Mellon or Dream...
Hit: 3 Stars

The first time I listened to this album, the day it was released, I was initially excited for what I felt was a return to form. As the album plowed on however, I became disappointed with the lack of diversity; the quirky, gear-shifting metal/pop/dreamy/acoustic style that Corgan (let's be honest, Corgan and Chamberlin ARE the Pumpkins) established up through Mellon Collie/Aeroplane is pretty much AWOL.

So I put this one aside.

Lately I've been loading up all my CDs onto the new computer I've purchased, and of course that's almost like digging through old photo albums - you end up reminiscing and and laughing and crying over every other album you dig up for an hour or so. At least I do.

Anyway, I made it to the S's in my collection and had been uploading and jamming on Pumpkins for a couple hours, and this one made it into the drive. After checking this out again, it really doesn't seem as dense and one-sided as it once did.

BUT.

It IS pretty dense and one sided. That being said, Zeitgeist really isn't far removed at all from Mellon Collie. Take all the awesome heavy songs from that album, throw out all the softer, experimental songs, and strip away all the humor, and you end up with Zeitgeist. It's kind of funny to me, because I was about 15 when Mellon came out, and it was amazing to me at the time (still is a great album in my opinion). I recall the EP Zero coming out about a year later with The Aeroplane set and thinking, 'Holy Crap if they made a whole album like the Zero EP it would be the best Pumpkins ever!'.

Well.... Here it is. Machina was unlistenable to me. This one is all of the heavy, less of the idiot (Machina), none of the fun (Mellon and prior). Basically the Zero EP extended. There are some more whimsical, mellon collie moments, such as the final song, Pomp, but your ears are numb by the time it shows up. If the tracks from American Gothic (the latest EP from Corgan/Pumpkins) replaced an equal number of the metal workouts on this album, it would have been a much different, more rewarding experience.

Hopefully, Billy will one day recapture the glory the right way. In the mean time, this isn't too bad of a rock album, but it's not that great either. Three Stars.

Zeitgeist Poster

The Smashing Pumpkins are back! After seven years, the acclaimed Pumpkins have returned with Zeitgeist. Featuring the single "Tarantula," this new sound is not to be missed.
Inside the buzzing hive of Smashing Pumpkins' guitars is clearly where bandleader Billy Corgan feels most comfortable. So, after a seven-year hiatus for the short-lived group Zwan and his surprisingly sunny 2005 solo album, Corgan has revived the Pumpkins in all the six-string-spattered shades of emotional gray that made them one of the greatest bands of the alt-rock era. Longtime drummer Jimmy Chamberlin, along with famed boardsmiths Roy Thomas Baker and Terry Date as well as Corgan himself coproduced. Chamberlin also supports mountainous layers of guitar with his fiercest playing. This is a version of the band dedicated to early bare-knuckled form, with a few exceptions: Corgan's grown into a more powerful wordsmith and his lengthy guitar solo explorations of yore are replaced with a trim, barbed textural approach that's ultimately more vicious. That is, until the centerpiece "United States" stretches into an epic punk-metal-informed sibling of Jimi Hendrix's "Machine Gun," with Corgan's strings singing like explosions and twisting metal as he warbles about revolution. Much of this album conjures literal and sonic visions of apocalypse, but there's grace, too, in the blithe grind of the hopeful "That's the Way (My Love Is)" and the melodic "Neverlost." Overall, Corgan's captivating effort to mine both the spirit of these turbulent times and the soul of his defining band is a smashing success. --Ted Drozdowski
