Free Music Review: I was positive it would suck....until it didn't...
Hit: 5 Stars

I loved Smashing Pumpkins in the '90s. But like a lot of people, I was destroyed by Adore. And even though Machina was decent, I never really recovered my previous affection. (Zwan and TheFutureEmbrace almost put me off all music for good!)

So I was sure Zeitgiest would be terrible. I was sure the "new" Pumpkins was just a get-richer quick scheme. I was sure I'd buy the CD, listen to it once and spend the next two weeks complaining about how miserable it is.

You know what? It's really, really good. I mean, it's fantastic. When I heard Tarantula for the first time a month or so ago, I liked it, I thought it rocked, but I was sure it would be a fluke. When the CD came out, I read some of the other positive reviews on amazon and from other sources and there started to be a glimmer of hope that it wouldn't be the steaming pile I was still expecting.

Then I went and bought it. This CD takes you through all facets of Billy's brilliantly creative mind. The CD is complex and nuanced lyrically, with a variety of sounds that seems to span the "real" Pumpkins' career. Even if you hate Adore and Zwan, there's something about these songs that move beyond simply reminding you of those failed experiments. These songs forge their own identities. And that's not to mention the songs like Tarantula that rock your face off. United States is my favorite song on the album. I can't wait to hear it live.

Seriously, please take the advice of this converted skeptic: Do yourself a favor and buy this CD.

Free Music Review: Great album...
Hit: 5 Stars

If you dig the Pumpkins material and the variety of styling that Billy Corgan has gone after, you'll like this album. The low tuning does create a less sonic pleasing tone than their previous albums. And his recording technique for the vocals seem more "front" than previous albums as well, which in subtle ways distracts the listener from the guitars/drums.

If you're looking for a frame of reference, think "white spider/blue skies bring tears" from Machina II, meets Mellon Collie era rock, with a touch of Billy C and Jimmy C's solo albums. I feel there is less experiment going on, though definitely a return to heart-felt, straight up rock (definitely not Adore era styling). There are the softer tones, but I guarantee that the first tunes that will jump out at you are the ones that make you think "hell yeah."

I'd give this one a 4.5 stars to make the point that this one isn't quite what their older albums are, but it really is a great album once you fall into it. My personal belief is that if they follow up with another album in the next couple of years, and let two other band members contribute to the material, this will be an amazing platform for them to launch off of. Skimming through the album, it looks like only Billy C. and Jimmy C. wrote and recorded the music, which seems to me to be the cause of the somewhat surprisingly "empty" sound when it comes to the experimental and sonic edge you'd expect from the pumpkins. Still...as said a few times here, a great album.

Free Music Review: The Smashing Pumpkins...Zeitgeist....a 5 star album....Adore/ MCIS songs.
Hit: 5 Stars

It nice to have The Smashing Pumpkins back even through band changes and 7 years since the last album. Its shame that the fine and gorgeous D'Arcy Wretzky on bass and James Iha on guitar are no longer in the band, but Billy Corgan has picked up 2 musicians to play for the new album. Billy Corgan has picked up very good looking bass player/vocals Ginger Reyes and plays pretty well for what I have seen which is cool. Also now on board is John Schroeder on guitar/vocals. The Smashing Pumpkins are right back on track and Zeitgeist is a great album. The album starts off with a goth kick with Doomsday Clock (song on Transformers soundtrack) and 7 Shades Of Black. The first released song from Zeitgeist is the very catchy Tarantula and neat retro 60ish hippy feel featuring the new band members Ginger and John. Songs on Zeitgeist weave through a total feel of Adore (my favorite SP album) and MCIS. Songs that have the Adore feel are Bleeding The Orchid, Neverlost, For God And Country, Pomp And Circumstance, and Zeitgeist all could easily be on Adore. Songs that have the MCIS feel are Doomsday Clock (which also reminds me of The End Is The Beginning Is The End from the Batman & Robin soundtrack...Doomsday Clock also on a soundtrack for the Transformers like stated earlier), 7 Shades Of Black, That's The Way (My Love Is), Tarantula, Starz, United States, Bring The Light, and (Come On) Let's Go and the same is true with MCIS. Get this album definitely worth it.

Free Music Review: Best Album of 2007
Hit: 5 Stars

I really didn't know what to expect from the new album...I was just hoping it had some good tracks. Luckily, the album has exceeded my expectations.

Billy is in top form, his top-notch songwriting skills are on display throughout the album. Several of these songs are destined to become fan classics, including: Bleeding the Orchid, United States, For God and Country, and the new single, Tarantula.

Jimmy Chamberlin is given room to shine on nearly every track. Chamberlin, now the band's not-so-secret weapon, pushes the music into new directions. His drum tracks are now pushed to the forefront of the songs, highlighting his amazing skill.

Overall an interesting continuation from Machina/Machina II. Each track demands repeat listens. Corgan has created another truly unique album, that may leave some scratching their heads at first. But it only takes a few listens to grasp the album's raw power and overall brilliance.

This album is not an attempt to re-create the Pumpkins sound, if there is such a thing. It's like every other SP album, a step forward. Billy decided to step forward with hard-hitting songs, but maintaining the band's ever-present beautiful subtleties.

The Smashing Pumpkins haven't missed a beat.

Free Music Review: This albulm is by far the best since MCIS!!!!
Hit: 5 Stars

Look... ive been a pumpkins fan since the late 80's, and saying that, I really dont understand why ppl say that they can tell a difference with the absence of james and darcy. I for 1 have a great feeling of nostalgia for the old line up, but darcy and james never contributed anything but asthetics, and a couple of b-side quality singing efforts on MCIS and Gish. Billy and Jimmy have always been the backbone of the music. James has stated many times in interviews after the bands demise that "the only way the pumpkins will be gone is if billy makes it so" .

Music wise this record is the best since MCIS. The Ava Adore influence that was still there for Machina is gone. Cruchy chords, layerd with screeching guitar is here in droves. Billy's singing is a bit to layerd for my taste. I kind of wished he would leave the layering on the floor, but its a small gripe and doesnt take away from the music. This is not Siamese 2 or MCIS 2, it is on the other hand a great evolution of a great band. Get in your car and grank up the volume, cause its awsome, and pumpkin fans...and rock fans for that matter....will love it! We all wish we we're in high school again, but we have to move on, and so have the pumpkins. Long Live Rock & Roll!!!
