Free Music Review: A little sincerity is a dangerous thing.
Hit: 5 Stars

These are the best of the best. Albums aside, the Smiths most rare and raucous tracks find their way onto Louder than Bombs. Living up to the title, the Smiths bash their way through the breakneck Sweet and Tender Hooligans, and brooding Rubber Ring. Bashful and dismal Morrissey's bellowing lyrics and Marr's growling guitars are beautifully featured on this compelling compilation.

The Smiths were, after all, a rock band, with pop sensibility perhaps but ultimately their charm and success worked its way from the punk influenced drums and monotone vocals.

Moving on to bigger and sometimes better things, this is a totem from the good old days. When lads were lads and the Smiths were the biggest thing.

Gotta love that Atlantic difference... some albums come over to North America with a brilliant looking cover and a slight variation in track listings, then they become collector's items, or else (in this case) essential compilations that make the buying of later editions completely unnecessary.

Unlike the mind-numbing, track-time warping of the "Best of Smiths volumes 1 and 2", this is the Smiths at their very best, and in the proper context, also. If you have this, then "Hatful of Hollow", you don't need much else. "Louder Than Bombs" repackages tracks from their early albums, and replaces "The World Won't Listen" as the US release.

One of the best British compilations of all time.

Free Music Review: This disc has opened my eyes.
Hit: 5 Stars

"Singles" may seem like the obvious choice for someone wanting just one Smiths collection, but if you can deal without "How Soon Is Now" and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out", THIS is the Smiths disc to have. 24 tracks of 5-star music. It includes favorites like "Shoplifters Of The World Unite", "Panic", and "Shakespear's Sister", as well as the excellent obscure cuts "Half A Person", "Back To The Old House", and "Unloveable". Plus it has "Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want", which was also on the "Pretty In Pink" soundtrack. Every song is better than the last, right up to "Asleep", which is practically a lullaby. Louder Than Bombs is both quality and quantity, and any Smiths fan should own it.

Free Music Review: You just can't go wrong with bombs.
Hit: 5 Stars

This is by far the best Smiths collection you can get. Not only is it the biggest(24 tracks) but it's also a great glimpse into The Smiths back catalog of b-sides. Some of the tracks I could of done without (Unloveable, Golden lights) and had them replaced with some classic tracks (That Joke isn't funny anymore, barbarism begins at home)but it's a great collection none the less. One of the jems on Bombs is the collection exculsive "Asleep" which is one of the most beautiful and tear jerking songs The Smiths ever wrote, and as we all know they wrote alot of them. So yes. Pick this up if you're tired of your Best of Vol 1 and 2 and want to listen to the real meat of The Smiths. you won't be disapointed

Free Music Review: An album in its own right!
Hit: 5 Stars

Louder Than Bombs was a Smiths singles, b-sides, and non-album track compilation that was released right around the time they were breaking up. Even though it's not a proper album, it is a fantastic record. Songs like Half a Person, London, Sweet and Tender Hooligan, Shelia Take a Bow, Panic, Ask, Rubber Ring, You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby, and Asleep would have enhanced any of their albums had they been included. The only song on this album to avoid at all costs is their dreadful cover of Golden Lights, which Morrissey butchered with some post-production touches without the other band member's knowledge. Otherwise, this is indispensible.
