Free Music Review: Where there's smoke . . .
Hit: 5 Stars

Smokin' is an album that can be enjoyed for its fine performances on traditional instruments, a delightful album for fans of Boston, bluegrass, or anyone who likes good music.

It's but one of over 50 bluegrass and country tribute albums from CMH Records to popular musicians and bands, a collection that includes tributes to Bruce Springsteen, Van Morrison, The Allman Brothers, Cat Stevens, Pink Floyd, The Who, Bob Marley, and Elton John, among others.

A huge money-maker for CMH, these albums are produced, performed, and arranged by California native and Santa Barbara resident, David West. Besides playing guitar, mandolin, banjo, bass, and dobro - and thus capable of making the recordings all by himself - West also calls on a huge cast of excellent studio musicians from nearby Los Angeles.

Of the three Boston tribute albums currently available, Smokin' is the most entertaining and by far the one with most replay value. While the performances stick close to the established melodies, the choice of instruments requires some creative tinkering with arrangements that breathes new life into many of these songs. Amada, with fiddle and guitar trading leads, comes off as a melancholy Celtic ballad. Played at a mid-tempo and featuring harmonica, pedal steel, and a honky-tonk piano, Hitch a Ride sounds like a cover the Outlaws might have made. And in a masterful bit of playing and mixing, David West turns Don't Look Back into the album's most delightful number, a one-man show with solos on guitar, mandolin, banjo, and dobro.

The album consists of 12 songs taken from the band's first three albums: Boston (More Than A Feeling, Peace Of Mind, Foreplay/Longtime, Smokin', Rock & Roll Band, Hitch A Ride, Let Me Take You Home Tonight), Don't Look Back (Don't Look Back, A Man I'll Never Be), Third Stage (Amanda, We're Ready) and Greatest Hits (Higher Power).
