Free Music Review: The 90's Weren't ALL Bad!

Snot, for having the unfortunate luck of coming up in the music of cookie-cutter angst-rock age of the mid-to-90's, Snot manages to blow past the usual cliches of the Limp Bizkit/Korn crowd. Obvious comparisons are early Red Hot Chili Peppers and Rage Agains the machine, with their funky, bass-laden and drum heavy groove, but few seem to notice their pull from early hardcore punk (notably Bad Brains) and even early grindcore (listen hard, and you can hear the cookie-monster vocals in the breakdown on "Snooze Button"). Loud, obnoxious and full of rebellious attitude but not lacking a sense of humor, they ARE the apex of California hard rock in the 1990's. Their album goes in all directions without losing track of the desire to make funky-yet-aggressive music. I fail to se the "mess" critics have decried within this album; I hear nothing but a focused and inventive album that blows it's "nu metal' comrades out of the water. Obviously, Lynn Scott's energy and impressive vocals are the turbo to the band's WRX, but each respective musician knows their role in what they are trying to acomplish; an outstandingly creative drummer, an incredibly funky bassis and a powerful axe-man, this band delivers a solid album that is easy enough to listen to all the way through on long car rides, [...].
