Free Music Review: A Lethal Dose of Beautiful Brutality

I've been a fan of Soilwork ever since I first listened to "Natural Born Chaos" which was indeed an excellent album and one of my favorite melodic death metal albums in my collection as well. They are truly one of Sweden's finest melodic death metal bands, and their latest album from 2007 "Sworn to a Great Divide" simply proves that these Swedish dudes still got it. This album is just a great lethal dose of beautiful melodic brutallity, it's just great and I like it alot. This album also features new guitarist Daniel Antonsson who replaces longtime lead guitarist and chief songwriter Peter Wichers, but not to worry, Daniel proves to be a good guitarist in his own right. The production on this album is just solid, and of course the musicianship is splendid and superb. Bjorn "Speed" Strid's vocals are just flat out awesome as always. His vocals range from vicious, aggressive screaming to heartfelt, genuine melodic clean singing. Devin Townsend sure did a fantastic job of producing Speed's vocals, and I applaud him for that. Ola Frenning and Daniel Antonsson's riffs are brutal, heavy, and melodic, and the leads, solos, and harmonies are just superb, majestic, and fun to hum along to. Dirk Verbeuren does an all around solid, powerful job behind the drums as well. I enjoy every song on this album, as they're all definately worth the listen, but here's a look at my favorites. The opening title track "Sworn to a Great Divide" is pure blissful brutality. It features some fast brutal drumwork, ferocious riffing, great screaming/singing vocals, and a great winding melodic guitar solo as well. Track two "Exile" is another favorite of mine and a great melodic number which features nice melodic riffage, more great screaming/singing vocals from Speed, a very catchy melodic sung chorus, and a great melodic induced solo to boot. My personal favorite song on here no doubt has to be track five, "The Pittsburgh Syndrome", a fast, merciless, unrelenting mosh pit worthy bruiser that is highlighted by wicked, fast, brutal drumming, vicious, fast, punching riffs, vicious screaming vocals, and a catchy brutal chorus that will definately get the mosh pits going like nuts. Other favorites on here include "Breeding Thorns" and "Your Beloved Scapegoat" which both feature some more great soloing. "I, Vermin", "As the Sleeper Awakes" which features some more fast brutal drumming and some catchy, heavy, groove-laden riffs, "Sick Heart River" which features another solid, genuine vocal performance by Speed, nice melodic yet heavy guitarwork, and some heavy, thumping, pounding drum beats, and "20 More Miles" which features more another great all around guitar solo and some nice double bass drumming. Yeah, I know some people who'll enjoy Soilwork's older stuff like "Steelbath Suicide", "A Predator's Portrait" and "The Chainheart Machine" might and will not like this album, and that's fine with me, but if you're a fan of Soilwork through and through like I'am, then you'll definately enjoy this album. Give it a shot, end of review.
