Free Music Review: The Velvet Hour

THE VELVET HOUR is the new album by the midwestern synthpop group Somegirl. I first heard of Somegirl on a mixed live cd by DJ Coppertop a few years ago. At the time Somegirl had a different singer. THE VELVET HOUR features new singer Laura Hillman. When I first heard the new album, I found myself liking Laura a lot more than the previous singer whose vocals was monotonous and flat at times which dragged down the previous album.
While I did like the previous Somegirl cd, I wasn't all that impressed with the material. Despite my lukewarm response, it did not stop me from wanting to hear THE VELVET HOUR. Now that I have listened to THE VELVET HOUR a few times, I must say I really enjoy Laura Hillman's vocals a lot. She made the sixteen track album a lot of fun to listen to. Stephen and Laura do a couple of cover songs on the new album "Careless Memories" by Duran Duran and "Super Trouper" by ABBA. I actually enjoyed the odd cover of "Super Trouper" (my favorite ABBA song). It was different. I wasn't too crazy about changing "Glasgow" to "Chicago" in the lyrics but overall it is a fun song. The Duran Duran song is pretty good, not quite as good as the ABBA cover. As for the rest of the album, I enjoyed the original material. They all had good catchy pop hooks. I hope that Stephen Mark will keep Laura around for a long time. He found a real winner in this new singer. She made the new Somegirl cd something worth listening to over and over again.
