Free Music Review: Favorite DCFC album
Hit: 5 Stars

When you listen to a cd, why do you listen to it? Simply because it sounds cool, or you enjoy how it relaxes you, or it fits a certain atmosphere? If that's how you listen to cd's, don't bother getting this album. I wouldn't want you to. This album is best enjoyed by those who listen to something because they get the feeling inside of it. I don't know why so many people here call this album pop and lighthearted. I completely disagree. The lyrics are not particularly dark, as opposed to maybe, lyrics from Alice in Chains' "Dirt", but they aren't exactly happy either. I absolutely love them. "Sleep Spent" is a great song. There is a lot more to this album than everyone seems to let on. The key to DCFC's music is that it takes a lot of listening before you actually get it, and the emotional value begins to sink in. I have been listening for three years, and just in the last six months or so, has the meaning of their music, the emotion behind it, the depression, sadness, and confusion finally begin to show themselves through the tone of Ben's voice and the guitar riffs. I'm not suggesting this is a depressing album, in fact it's rather comforting. Most of their albums are.

Free Music Review: Pop Rocks.
Hit: 5 Stars

Following in the pop/rock footsteps of such Northwest bands as Modest Mouse, 764-HERO and indie heroes, Built to Spill, Death Cab for Cutie has managed to create a brilliant, sparkling CD debut (they released a cassette in the Winter of 1998 entitled "You Can Play These Songs with Chords" on Elsinor Records). Lead singer/songwriter Ben Gibbard manages stay away from the late 90's alterna-rock habit of injecting too much irony into his ernest and at sometimes touching lyrics. While musically, Gibbard and guitarist Chris Walla have fun with everything from cellos to samples from "Jawbreaker", including a guest apperance by Erika Jacobs on the quiet, shimmering track "Line of Best Fit". From the opening "early morning" cello's that open Airplanes (Bend to Sqaures) to the somber and sleepy texture of the disorted guitars that close it (Line of Best Fit) and the dazzling rock music in between, Something About Airplanes cleary stands out as one of the best releases of the year.

Free Music Review: Really different stuff
Hit: 5 Stars

An interesting mix of inspired mellow rock and moody calm, Something About Airplanes is the highly listenable, infectious debut from Death Cab for Cutie, a band that has now released several other albums and enjoyed a moderate amount of success. From listening to this, it's not hard to see why. Death Cab is bouncier than Coldplay and calmer than Modest Mouse, finding a nice niche in between. "Bend To Squares" and "Your Bruise" have a gothic feel, while "President of What" and "Pictures in an Exhibition" are a little lighter feel to them. I wonder about how the band was spread around amongst so many people, since almost all of these tracks are too different to be played on radio. I can only think that it must have been word of mouth, because after hearing this, I had to tell everyone I knew about them. Hopefully my review will have convinced another listener unfamiliar with the group to buy this album and start listening to the band's other releases as well.

Free Music Review: Overall review of Death Cab For Cutie
Hit: 5 Stars

This style of music is what I have been looking for my entire life, I just haven't known. This band has brought something to the table that I really enjoy. The very first sample I heard of Ben Gibbard was, "Don't wake me, I plan on sleeping in". That barely audible tune that I heard while off the coast of Africa is what set it off. I searched and searched and now have almost all of their CDs. I Love Plans, it's an amazing CD. Translantisicm trails it, but not by much. I am now listening to Something About Airplanes. I take each CD one at a time. I will listen to only one CD, over and over until I am familiar with all of the tracks, it is then that I decide on what I think about the CD, I sort of invest time into each CD. I'm still working on "Airplanes". It has it's ups and downs, while the other two I mentioned are constant ups. Of course all reviews are opinions, so give all of Death Cab's albums a try to see what you think. I look forward finishing "Airplanes" and starting with the next.

Free Music Review: Perspective
Hit: 5 Stars

I think the disparity in reviews (jumping from a more accurate 4 or 5 to a ridiculous 1) indicate that this CD is not for the average human being. If you expect a CD full of radio-friendly fist-pumping arena rock, your are in for a disappointment. Then again, you are too slight of mind to appreciate Death Cab anyway. The nuances of a slower song (which is a good portion of this album) might take longer to appreciate, but by no means does that make them 'boring'. Do people complain that Elliott Smith doesn't rock out?...that would be ignorant. The melodies on this disc are exquisite - notice i didnt say on this song or this song...This whole disc is impeccable...but do yourself a favor. If you enjoy bopping your head to the latest radio single from matchbox 20 or some other such inane dribble...please, please dont buy this album. If you have decent tastes - go right ahead, youll be pleasantly surprised.
