Free Music Notes for Something About AirplanesFree Music Review: quintessential emo Hit: 5 Stars
Death Cab for Cutie captured my heart, on, appropriately, a rainy Sunday. Songs like "pictures in an exhibition" are exactly what emo's about. Their sweet lyrics and gentle drums outline the fierce passion for music I adore. All Northwest natives should have this album. Period.
Free Music Review: Great Product! Hit: 5 Stars
If you like Death Cab, you'll love this CD! It is a good reference to before Death Cab somewhat sold out. I'd reccomend this to anyone!
Free Music Review: For you to trash Hit: 4 Stars
It's funny reading an interesting review and then seeing that it was helpful to 0 out of 8 people. People trash reviews like they do this band. If you disagree with what a reviewer writes, you vote them down. Interesting.Poor little Seattleans! All the press and hype surrounding Death Cab has your synapses misfiring! You must rebel! You must sign on sign in write up! Damn, why make such a fuss over a band you DON'T like? I won't claim that this record rulz. I personally like it, but that's just an opinion. They remind me of Oasis and I don't like Oasis. Strange. I hate Emo. I hate the word. I hate emo. I love Built to Spill. That's certainly not emo. I like Modest Mouse. How could that be emO? I don't understand all this crap. MM and BTS is not pop. Death Cab is certainly pop-sounding. But also is certainly NOT POP, since more than half the reviewers HATE it. That's not popular. I've never heard any hype on these guys. Maybe that's why I'm not as mad as all yous guys. I like it for some strange reason. It's not music I even think I would like. Except for the fact that it reminds me of the Swedish band Kent. They rule. Just think: a couple guys form a band and play. You get super mad because you think they're trying so hard to gain the Emo following. I feel sorry for you. No, I don't.
Free Music Review: I need more Death Cab!!! Hit: 4 Stars
What a joy it is to be turned on or to discover music from an artist you're hearing for the first time. I literally stumbled onto Death Cab For Cutie, just passing time in an FYE. I picked up "Something About Airplanes" and thought I'd give a random listen. Needless to say, the incredible melodies, and compelling lyrical content immediately got me open. DCFC bears a strong resemblance to another favorite band of mine, Built To Spill. Lead singer Ben Gibbard's delivery is almost dead on for BTS's Doug Martsch's wailing, melancholy tone. That's a good thing to me, as the same things that drew me in to BTS also seemed to have me ready to expand the Death Cab collection to include their other releases. But S.A.A is a great place to start if you're new to this band like me, "Bend To Squares", "Champagne From A Paper Cup", and "Amputations" are all perfect examples of indy rock done right. The titles of the songs are something else. (The Face That Launched 1000 S****??) I've heard from a lot of DCFC fans who say that this isn't even close to their best album. (Plans was mentioned a lot) If that's the case, my pockets might be in real trouble. Looking forward to the next time they're in Philly!
Free Music Review: "Ben Gibbard is the Ernest Hemingway of songwriting..." Hit: 4 Stars
When I first heard this cd, I was bored. Certainly not for everyone. I mean, it's not especially catchy, modern or even warm. But with repeated listens, "Airplanes," with all its lo-fi indie-ness grows on you. And it is quite good. Like everyone says, they come from the great Northwest sounding like Built to Spill, 764-Hero and American Football. Some of the lyrics just stick to your head. "Ohh, what a way to cut lengthwise." The songs are sparse - you can taste the air between his words. DCFC relies on subtle touches, like a cello, different effects and simple riffs, to manage a collection of oddly reflective tunes. Not a chore, once you discover that it's a prize... A must have for all DCFC fans! If you are new to DCFC, check out "We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes" or even "The Photo Album." An indie music accomplishment!
