Free Music Notes for Something About Airplanes

Free Music Review: Sweet intro
Hit: 3 Stars

3 1/2

Worthwhile introduction into the fragile pop-rock melodies that would drive their early career into teenage hearts all over America. Even with less-then-invigorating production Deathcab thrives when lingering around gently distorted, invitingly aggressive compositions that get to air out, something they contrast well enough with more straight-ahead rockers on their debut.

Free Music Review: I'm a hard reviewer and I liked this CD.
Hit: 3 Stars

Earnest, emotional lyrics...hooky melodies. i am a twee popper and I still enjoyed this medium-testosterone music. 2nd half of album gets kinda fuzzed out, which I personally don't like, but overall this is a good buy and a keeper.

Free Music Review: this has nothing to do with airplanes
Hit: 2 Stars

This C.D. is probably the best constructed of Death Cab For Cutie's albums in my opinion, for it has the most variety and has more complex rock than on some of its other more soft releases. Its lyrics aren't quite as well articulated as those on the album "Transatlanticism", but it's hard to remember that while paying attention to the catchy rhythms and sound effects that transpire in nearly every featured song. Styles range from long mystic tunes like "Line of Best Fit" to fairly energetic ones like the one I'd recommend most: "President of What". This track has good lyrics and rhythms, as well as a unique guitar progression that is rather catchy. Besides this song, most of the songs have a rippling guitar effect or some sort of technological jest to go with the music. Negative sides of the album are that the C.D. has nothing to do with airplanes, it has unrequired language in some instances, and does not have loads and loads of interesting melodies. Still, some tracks are likeable and if nothing else admirable for there uniqueness in comparison to the other featured songs. I would not suggest the purchase of this album, but overall it isn't horribly bad.
I recommend:

Free Music Review: What's so special about doing what everyone else does?
Hit: 2 Stars

In Washington they must have at least a thousand emo-pop bands. I'm sure everyone reading this is familiar with the aforementioned Modest Mouse and 764-Hero, and so on. So what sets this band apart from the other thousand bands who know their shoes better than their faces? "They're from Bellingham!" the press says, "and they have an organ!". Well, I'm not buying it. "Something About Airplanes" is full of decently written emotional pop songs, weren't a hundred albums like that released last year? What we have here is indie rock without the rock. This band keeps getting praise heaped on them for doing nothing more than writing songs in a similar vein as hundred of other bands and doing it one hundred miles above all the other bands doing it. Big deal. Conformity is the next big thing. Watch this band ride the crest of the emo wave while thousands of bands doing something different can't even get a show. Death Cab For Cutie are nice guys, I'm sure. But the personality of the members can't help the personality of the music.

Free Music Review: What is the big deal? This is boring!
Hit: 2 Stars

I really don't know what the big deal is. Boring song parts, boring structures. I like some mellow music, and I'm not opposed to more experimental songs (I just finished listening to Galaxie 500 and Zoviet France), so it's not like this is going over my head or anything. If you live in Seattle, like I do, then you're constantly inundated with reviews about how great this band is, so I hope this review gets up on the site to help balance things out a bit.
