A very good friend asked me what film sound track was my all time favourite.
What an impossible question.
Harking back to all the films and music having seen and heard, one soundtrack comes to mind.
"Somewhere in Time", combined with Rachmaninov's Paganini Rhapsody Variation No. 18, and John Barry's original soundtrack that eerily connects and sounds almost a part of Racmaninov's beautiful Rhapsody of love, instantly came to me, when viewing the film again.
A sentimental story of true love traversing across time, a beautiful novel by John Matheson, who also wrote the screenplay, and had a cameo appearance in the film combined with the Russian romantic's most heart-felt sonata and John Barry's beautiful soundtrack, really is the perfect back drop to this unusual tale of time crossed lovers'. It is music that expresses beautiful sadness.
Some have said that "Somewhere in Time" and most of Rachmaninov's music is too sentimental bordering on mawkishness. I've always thought that the Russian Pianist's music is, for the most part, tragic, however never sentimental. The novel, originally titled, Bid Time Return by Matheson is a much sadder story, more tragic than the film in many ways. Although the film is still tragic as all good love stories should be.
If you enjoy beautiful music, the soundtrack to "Somewhere in Time" would be an excellent addition to your music library.
