I had the memorable oppotunity to listen to this on a 33 lp on Mr. House' couch in Detroit. I met his daughter, and she and her husband were gracious enough to play his stereo, which had an lp that was given the Son House from Columbia records. This was the first time that the record had been played since his death in Detroit.
What a humbling experience speak with them about her father, and how much of an impression that he left on the blues world. I could feel his presence as my friend and I sat on hisu couch, listend to this record on his stereo cabinet.. you know tha the kind that is more furniture than equipment, but to hear of how proud he was of this record... the only one he ever had of his own music.. I recommend this to anyone. The sound in his voice, is haunting to say the least... especially on the song death letter...... wow..... what can I say but, buy this record.
Original Delta Blues Poster
This Columbia Legacy reissue of the 1965 release is one of the few recordings available of one of the blues' founding fathers. It contains some of his best songs, which have unsurprisingly become classics of the Delta blues genre: "Death Letter," "Preachin' Blues," "Levee Camp Moan," "Pony Blues," and "Downhearted Blues" are all here. Though not as comprehensive as Father of the Delta Blues: The Complete 1965 Sessions, this CD is an excellent introduction to this seminal artist's work, revealing the creativity, passion, skillful guitar playing, and rich singing that helped form a whole new kind of music. --Genevieve WilliamsBlues Music CDs
