Free Music Review: The godsend of a thrilling new Verdi soprano

We live in an era where Slavic sopranos fill the roster of every opera house, but Sondra Radvanovsky isn't one of them. The 41-year-old was born outside Chicago, and with luck her strong, gleaming dramatic soprano will become very well known: she is scheduled to appear in the Met's live HD broadcast of Il Trovatore. This recital CD begins with Leonora's first aria, making it obvious form the start that we are hearing a true Verdi voice. This is one of Radvanovsky's signature roles, perfectly suiting a presence that combines feminine softness with astonishing power and admirable agility. Leontyne Price had the same combination to a superlative degree, but on first acquaintance Radvanovsky reminds me more of Tebaldi -- it's amazing that we should even be speaking of her in the same breath with such stellar singers. they seemed to be a lost breed, and one can only pray that over-praise and ovework doesn't send this artist down the wrong path.

Setting worry aside, the entire CD is a joy vocally; I can't add anything to the detailed praise already given by others. The conducting of Constantine Oberlian is pedestrian but adequate. It causes irritation, however, because there is some imprecision and slackness in Radvanovsky's rhythm here and there. I can't tell if this is entirely the conductor's fault, but it could well be. The good news is that the singer sails above him, seizing the high ground for herself, which is exactly what divas do. Finally, I have no idea why this recording appears on Delos and not one of the major labels. Happily, this small company has made its name through superb sound, and they come through splendidly here, giving Radvanovsky's voice its due in warmth and presence. Only the too-resonant hall mars the soundstage, and many audio systems won't pick that up.

I came upon this CD via an e-mail form a very excited vocal fancier. I'm just as thrilled, and if all goes well, the rest of the opera world will be, too.
