Free Music Notes for Songcatcher: Music from and Inspired by the Motion Picture

Free Music Review: Don't know what all the conflict is all about......Songs are pretty much the same as the movie...
Hit: 5 Stars

I love this CD. I think the conflict for people is that this soundtrack CD does not have a "score". If you are one of those people that loves to listen to the classical side of soundtracks, following each and every undulation of music and change of scene then this is not for you. That being said, if you liked the main songs sung in the film like Pretty Saro, Barbara Allen, Single Girl they are on this CD with the actors from the movie singing them.I personally bought the CD because I couldn't give a crap about a score, I wanted to listen and learn the songs from the film. Sure some extra "stars" were added to the soundtrack to beef it up, but the soundtrack still captures the essence of the movie. For me, the soundtrack does not wander too far off the beaten path and I'm happy I bought it.

Free Music Review: First Rate
Hit: 5 Stars

I actually bought this CD months before I actually saw the movie because I was a fan of so many of the artists on it. I was not disappointed.

This is a group of songs that are either directly from of closely tied to the traditional music of the Appalachian Mountains. Many have been "dressed up" a bit which is only keeping with those traditions in the first place with updated these songs as time went along (originally their British Isles counterparts were sung without any musical accompaniment). The best tracks here are the ones from Rosanne Cash, Dolly Parton, Maria McKee, Patty Loveless, Julie Miller, and Iris DeMent.

I eventually saw the movie and liked it, but not nearly as much as I liked this CD which is in constant rotation inside my CD player.

Free Music Review: Gorgeous new and old music
Hit: 5 Stars

Songcatcher has long been a favorite movie of mine for so many reasons--of course the beautiful music, but also the historical significance and some favorite actors and performers who were in the movie. But, it wasn't until recently that I discovered this album--where have I been??! The music couldn't be more beautiful, it's so deep and lyrical and full of emotion. For the reviewers who said this album was a dissapointment because it didn't feature every song from the movie--I think that's unfair as there are plenty of songs from the movie, but it also has other amazing ballads that are just in the album. This album makes me want to dig my banjo out of the closet, get on the first plane to Ashville, and live in a world of "old timey" bluegrass forever.

Free Music Review: Wonderful Singers, Wonderful Roots Music
Hit: 5 Stars

I came to this album without the predispositions others seem to have had and found a wealth of musical treasure in the singers and their songs. For the purist, there is Iris Dement's mournful "Pretty Saro" and Hazel Dickens' "COnversation With Death"; for the post-modernists, Julie Miller's "All My Tears" and many commendable roots songs between these boundaries. For my money, Rosanne Cash's spare and heart-rending revival of "Fair and Tender Ladies" is worth the price of the CD. This is NOT a soundtrack--it is a compilation, and as with all such recordings, some outshine others, but I find the CD consistently strong and a great starting place for those wishing to further explore Appalachian roots music. Get it.

Free Music Review: Caught Me by Surprise
Hit: 5 Stars

I actually bought this off the "Amazon Recommends" screen when I was buying other bluegrass albums and found that it's far and away one of the best albums I've heard recently. Emmy Rossum's acapella rendering of the first verse of "Barbara Allen" took me back to the hills of the 10s and 20s like the "Amazing Grace" on the "Matewan" soundtrack and Allison Moorer's "Moonshiner" is broodingly beautiful in its modern darkness. For true twang, we have Iris DeMent singing "Pretty Saro" and for the hard-core top-40 country fan, we have the likes Deana Carter, Sara Evans, Patty Loveless, and Miss Dolly. What's not to love? I'll probably see the movie just because of this soundtrack.
