Free Music Notes for Songcatcher: Music from and Inspired by the Motion PictureFree Music Review: A Fine Folk Primer Hit: 5 Stars
I don't get it. This page is full on one star reviews complaining that a certain song isn't here. I thought a review was supposed to be about the music that IS on an album. With that in mind there is plenty here to adore. From the amazing duet with Emmy Rossum and Dolly Parton, to the stark "Wind and Rain" from Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. From Julie Miller's raw and acoustic take on her song "All My Tears," to Iris DeMent's devastating turn on the traditional "Pretty Saro," this album is a gem of traditional and traditionally inspired folk music. Such and such a song may not be here, but is "Rubber Soul" a terrible album because "Stawberry Fields Forever" isn't on it?

The film "Songcatcher" is a gem and so is the soundtrack album, featuring the priceless folk music from places like the Appalachian Mountains. These songs are often from old ballads in the "British Isles," and came from countries such as Wales and Cornwall, Ireland and Scotland, and were brought over by many Celtic immigrants from these lands, not only by the English. The step dance music from Ireland, and clogging from Welsh communities in the mountains of Wales are part of this great musical heritage, as are the wonderful Scots narrative ballads. Another gem, with even more authentic mountain music and song is "Songcatcher II" with many early recordings of performers, such as Maybelle Carter, who inspired all the rest.

I actually bought this CD months before I even saw the movie. That's because I enjoyed the work of many of the individual artists on it and saw no need to wait and see the movie.I was not disappointed in the music here. With few exceptions the tracks here are songs rooted in the traditional music of the British Isles by way of southern Appalachia. Most have been tastefully updated with modern adaptations, but some, such as Iris DeMent's take on "Pretty Saro," brim with a raw, almost primal beauty. When I finally saw the movie I did notice that few of the songs here were actually in the movie, but that was OK. What was in the movie and what is here were both sensational!
Free Music Review: "Wind and Rain" by Gillian Welch & David Rawlings Hit: 5 Stars
I'm not going to write a lot since that's "what I do" in life, and one can only do so much of it with the fingers one was provided with. What I am going to say is that I love the movie (rent it, buy it, see it), and have no objection to this "inspired by" CD. Here's the important part: Nobody has commented on Gillian Welch & David Rawlings "Wind and Rain." It is staggering, a juxtaposition of beauty and horror like few others. (The old song "Greenwood Sidee" as performed by the ancient band The Kaleidoscope comes to mind.) If you do not know Gillian Welch, start here, start anywhere, but start now. It will be (to borrow the title of one of her CD's) a "soul journey."
Free Music Review: More Traditional Than You Think Hit: 5 Stars
To those who think that this companion album to the movie "Songcatcher" presents these songs in a too modern or "over produced" manner seem to be missing the point. Folk music, such as that which is presented here, has ALWAYS been adapted to fit contemporary times. Many were outraged decades ago when traditional ballads started being sung with (gasp) musical accompaniment since their were originally sung acapella. So this CD merely continues in that same tradition. Besides, if anyone thinks Iris DeMent's version of "Pretty Saro" is a "sellout" they obviously have not heard the junk that gets played on commercial radio these days.
