Free Music Notes for Songcatcher: Music from and Inspired by the Motion PictureFree Music Review: Was looking for Maria, but in return found much more! Hit: 5 Stars
I have to admit that I bought this album for one reason: The incomprable Maria Mckee. Granted, I knew that there were some other very talented artists invloved with this soundtrack like Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris and Rosanne Cash, but it was Maria I was after. As I expected, her contribution of Wayfarin' Stranger was awesome. But, after getting over my Maria fix, I found the entire album to be great. A great example of American music and more importantly women in music. There is not one song I did not like. As we all know, that is a rarity these days. Buy and enjoy.
Free Music Review: Wonderful to hear traditional music again Hit: 5 Stars
Unlike many of the other reviewers I bought the CD before ever seeing the film. I can't seem to stop listening to it and actually enjoy it even more than the O Brother CD. As a long time fan of traditional music, it is great to see this music coming into the forefront again and making the general public aware of artists like Hazel Dickens and Iris Dement. I am certain that new comer, Emmy Rosum is someone we will be hearing much more from. I just saw the film this evening and recommend it highly. Accept the album for what it is, an inspiration not a soundtrack.
Free Music Review: Excellent Hit: 5 Stars
This is an excellent CD, but I just wish that I could get a complete soundtrack CD from the movie with all of the wonderful songs in the film. I am so glad that Iris Dement's song did make it on the CD, since that was one of the high points of the film for me. I have been a fan of hers for several years now, and I was so surprised and excited to see that she was in a movie. Little Emmy Rossum was excellent also, and I think Pat Carroll was great ( I remember her from TV way back in the early 60's). This CD which was inspired by the movie in indeed wonderful.
Free Music Review: Glorious! Hit: 5 Stars
What a glorious collection of music this CD is! Mostly acoustic the mood of this collection harkens back to the old folk ballads (many of which I grew up with) that form the basis of the type of country music that is experiencing a revival of late thanks to the "O Brother Where Art Thou" soundtrack. This CD forms a nice, if different, companion to that one and while it is not exactly 100% authentic it can serve as a splendid introduction to America's rural music heritage. If you like any of the artists featured here, you'll want to have this CD.
Free Music Review: Excellent on its own Hit: 5 Stars
This is an excellent collection of modern folk/bluegrass that should stand on its own. Yes, the movie was pedantic (and I'm a sucker for feminist stories), yes, bluegrass was almost exclusively sung by males in the first part of the century and yes these aren't the voices you hear in the movie. It's still filled with great reditions of great songs and makes me grateful that I live in a time when these great women singers get heard. I would have like to hear a few male voices thrown in, but that's a minor quibble.
