Free Music Notes for Songcatcher: Music from and Inspired by the Motion PictureFree Music Review: Almost Perfect Hit: 5 Stars
Currently my favorite album. The duet between Emmy Rossum and Dolly Parton is about the best harmony you will ever hear on a song of this genre. Subsituting other artists on the album for Emmy Rossum is surely a disapointment to all who saw the movie (like replacing a canary with lonesome cats). Her ability to sing the old ballads in the traditional syle as she did was a rare treat. The album is wonderful but its producers misjudged the ability of the movie's talent to carry it without the additional big names.
Free Music Review: A gem of a recording Hit: 5 Stars
I have not seen this movie as it has not played in my town yet, but I have heard this disc. While I can't comment on how it compares to the film I can say that it stands on its own mightily well. The format is pretty much the same throughout -- traditional songs or songs heavily influenced by them sung by an array of women singers. If you like the kind of traditional music that Nashville has been trying to kill off for years than this is for you. If you prefer the Muzak muck of Faith Hill, you best move on.
Free Music Review: another wworld Hit: 5 Stars
a wonderful, mesmerizing collection of songs of a genre which is rarely heard. beautiful a cappellas, tales of sadness, young love, old love, love forgotten, death, spirituality and omnipresent hope. this is a rare, unique gem. listen to it and be transported to another place, another time whose whose range of human emotions cut to the core of our lives. one of those rare times when the sound track is more evocative than the movie. it stands on its own as masterful work of art.
Free Music Review: Nice Modern Tribute To A Tradition Hit: 5 Stars
While the music hear isn't 100% traditional mountain music, it carries with it a deep reverence for that music and gives it a contemporary touch. Anyone who thinks that this is "commercial" music hasn't been listening to the tripe that clutters up commercial radio these days and anyone who is upset because the CD contains little of the music on the movie didn't pay very close attention when they were watching the movie as most of the music in the film only played for a few seconds.
Free Music Review: Excellent! Hit: 5 Stars
Anyone who thinks that this CD is merely a collection of Nashville sounding songs obviously has not spent much time listening to either. Granted most of the songs here did not appear in the movie but I can't imagine any commercial radio station playing anything here. This, much like the music of "O Brother" is the type of music Nashville has desperately been trying to kill off for years. For that reason alone it should be celebrated.
