Free Music Notes for Songs From The Neighborhood:The Music Of Mister RogersFree Music Review: A great tribute to a great song writer Hit: 5 Stars
This CD snd DVD is a great tribute to a great composer in Children's music. I enjoyed this CD a great deal. Each performer gave a great deal of care to bringing his or her personal touch to the music. It's a pleasure to listen to diffrent styles of music, too. The best interpretations came from Maureen Mc Govern's sublime singing of "This is just the Day". This version of that song stands on it's own and rightfully deserves a placing on a pop or jazz chart! I also think Ce Ce Winans wonderful singing for "Then your Heart is Full of Love" is nicely done. It's a very nice ballad to listen to. We also have a good version of "What Do you Do" with John Pizzarelli's big band sound. Donna Summer's take on "Are yoru Brave" with a combination of R and B/hiphop music is an interesting interperetation of Fred's music. It works very well, too! Ricky Skagg's great interpretation of "Something to do While We're Waiting " is certainly a good example of how a song could easily fit in the style of Bluegrass music. It's a very uplifting version! And Roberta Flack's version of "Won't You Be My Nieghbor" is very good. Amy Grant's "It's You I Like" is a fine song to listen to, also.
All in all, this is a great collection of songs that reflects how different artists have interpreted Fred's wonderful music. I think Fred would have appreciated the idea of his music in a different genre of music. It's certainly an honor to listen to this music. I recommend it for the general public. It's a recording for all ages, children and adults.
Free Music Review: A wonderful day in the neighbourhood! Hit: 5 Stars
Mister Rogers' TV programme touched the lives of millions of kids (and adults) too. This is a tribute CD featuring a stellar line up performing their own versions of some of our favourite Mr Rogers songs.
The line up includes country greats Crystal Gayle (performing `Did you know') and Ricky Scaggs (a bluegrass take on `Let's think of something to do while we're waiting'), gospel singers Amy Grant (`It's you I like') and Cece Winans (`Then your heart is full of love'), as well as Jon Secada (an upbeat take on `Won't you be my neighbour?'), and Roberta Flack (`Won't you be my neighbour?' ballad version).
Every performance is wonderful, but special mention has to be made of Donna Summer. Her version of `Are you brave' starts off as a ballad, which transforms into an upbeat R&B/hip hop laced theatrical take on the song. Awesome vocals untouched by time!
The entire ensemble features on the song `Thank you for being you'. The CD comes with a DVD showing the stars each giving a brief talk on Mr Rogers.
The collection was recently nominated for a Grammy: Best children's recording. A befitting tribute.
Free Music Review: Wonderful memories Hit: 5 Stars
I grew up watching Mr. Rogers and only until recently, I didn't realize he had written so many songs. Sung by a mixed genre of superb vocalists (Roberta Flack, Amy Grant, BJ Thomas, Donna Summer, etc.), these songs are as meaningful today as when first written. Unlike so many of today's "children's" songs (and I use that term loosely), these still speak wholesome messages, while also being as hip as anything else currently on the market. My nieces (ages 5 & 8) loved it. My friends' children (ages 3 thru 9) loved it. It's sad to see that some of these reviewers aren't in touch with their childhood (or don't want to be). No, it's not Fred Rogers singing them.
Or hip-hop/rap "artists" (once again, I use the term loosely)...thank goodness, but if Mrs. Fred Rogers gives it a thumbs-up, then I applaud what this album stands for.
I highly recommend this album for children, as well as adults who want to take a walk down memory lane. And I congratulate Dennis Scott (Producer) on his Grammy-award winning project!
Free Music Review: Fresh, Fun & Fabulous! Hit: 5 Stars
It takes careful thought and good musical taste to "update" songs such as these classic tunes from the Mr. Rogers songbook.
It's no wonder that "Songs from the Neighborhood" is this years Grammy- winning children's album;though this album is definitely not just for children. The songs are well-produced, very original in their concepts, and of course performed so flawlessly by some of today's best vocalists. The accompanying DVD is well worth a look also... it's very informative as well as entertaining!
Free Music Review: Mr. Rogers N Friends Hit: 5 Stars
This is a teriffic compliation of songs from the popular childrens show Mr Rogers Neighborhood. I am a disc jockey and was searching forever for the song It's You I Like to be used as a Father/Daughter dance and while I'm not a huge Amy Grant fan, the arrangement is fabulous and she puts a lot of emotion behind the vocal and the way it starts with a verse, is really nice. This is a must have if you like varying musical styles and reminising about your childhood.
