Free Music Review: a recipe for self-destruction

With the enviable advantage of hindsight, it is amazingly obvious from this record that Soul Coughing was doomed. The band is fraying in very different directions. The record often sounds sparse, unfinished even. Gabay and Steinberg were careening towards drum-and-bass and dragging the other two members fitfully with them, Doughty was completely strung out, and on a number of the songs it sounds like Mark de gli Antoni only figured out how to fit himself into the mix halfway through the track.
The heart and soul of this record is on $300 and St. Louise is Listening, where the uneven assortment coalesced into a thunderous stomping cacophony of funky rhythms, brilliant lyrics and exploding strange distorted keyboard noise and samples. The rest is in the ballpark, but it often feels one piece short of a symphony.
Somehow, this all works, it really does. Only Soul Coughing could have made it do so. But if the band hadn't been fraying, they might have stayed in the studio a bit longer and finished this thing. It could have been a masterpiece.
El Oso Poster
Soul Coughing expand their funky free-for-all with El Oso, a sturdy shack of samples rattling around in a boogie cup. No, it's not a disco revival, just a new way of grooving. Showing more muscle than on their previous release, Irresistable Bliss, frontman M. Doughty spews nonsequiturs between the band's airy jams as if he were the blue-eyed hip-hop equivalent of Robyn Hitchcock. Doughty and the band shake hands with the loping "Circles," whisper sweet nothings to the piano-fed "Blame," and create semi-organic drum & bass on "Blame." "$300," the most addictive cut, slips under a raga spell as keyboardist M'ark De Gli Antoni spikes the brew with digital dust. Aside from "So Far I Have Not Found the Science" (a nearly direct rip-off of their own "Blue Eyed Devil," from their debut release, Ruby Vroom), Soul Coughing have pushed their techno-funk sound further, making El Oso equally limber and bracing. --Jason JosephesAlternative Rock Music CDs
