Free Music Review: For Fans of Music

You COULD be lazy enough to label this band the "for fans of..." crap, but your bound to disappoint someone. It's been said, but I think this band really is one of a kind. Hip-hop, jazz, spoken-word, sampling, rock, who really knows? Even better, it's all one big stew of sounds to make music that really doesn't exclusively lean toward one genre. They have a sound of their own.
There sound is chemistry. Everything fits perfectly, never feeling awkward. A Jazz rhythm section with a sneaky way of bringing different elements to snicker as the rock-hating jazz purists are secretly being exposed to a different style. Doughty's guitar work on top is occasionaly funky, adding a bit of a touch. Oh, and a sampler. A winning ensemble all around. They get honors first place for that.
With Doughty's often a bit abstract and conjuring lyrics, your bound to imagine something like the streets of Wichita (with samples that sound like a neighborhood), which does feel like a small town. More upbeat songs sometimes steal the show, only to have another song steal the show after it. A bit dramatic describes Mr. Bitterness (try not to groove to that one), and Casiotone nation turns a bit chaotic (a different kind of chaos though). Doughty even sings a song, the excellent closer. It's a killer album, and it hardly let's up (most likely City of Motors).
So very hard to describe for me. They, however, don't cover millions of genres like Mr. Bungle or Naked City, though. Recommended for fans of Brittany Spears, Limp Bizkit, and Yanni.

Where the '60s had a fair amount of great blue-eyed soul, the 1990s had been remiss in offering up first-rate, blue-eyed hip-hop--until Soul Coughing came along. Frontman M. Doughty shied away from the label, dubbing the quartet's music "deep slacker jazz," which actually kinda fits tracks like the film noir homage, "Screenwriter's Blues." Doughty's acerbic, often hilarious (see "Casiotone Nation") rhymes--which never sound like he's trying to be too streetwise--float like butterflies over the sting-like-a-bee rhythm section of Sebastian Steinberg and Yuval Gabay. Add the unorthodox sampler technique of Mark de Gli Antoni, and you have a total package that you'll never tire of unwrapping. --David SpragueAlternative Rock Music CDs
