Free Music Notes for Soul of the Tango: The Music of Astor Piazzolla

Free Music Review: Superb
Hit: 5 Stars

Glorious music played with passion and vitality. Recorded music doesn't get much better than this.

Free Music Review: The seduction continues!
Hit: 5 Stars

Who is this fellow who keeps walking into the telephone booth to come out wearing yet another musical personna? Ma's splendid recordings of Bach have kept me breathless from the moment I first heard them. Now comes this lush, driving and oh-so passionate new Ma strutting his stuff pointy-toed and gaudy plummaged. Piazzolla's music is new to me and Ma and company's interpretations swept me off my feet. This is music that swirls and slides and stomps arrogantly right to the heart's hot center. It makes me feel that I could dance from wall to wall on magic feet.

Ma joins Perlman, Previn and other happy explorers who remind us that music is the language of infinite possibilities.

Free Music Review: Spectacular in substance and sound
Hit: 5 Stars

"Soul of the Tango" presents the music of Astor Piazzolla with all of the passion and excitement that one could imagine. The blending of the melancholy strains of Yo Yo Ma's cello with the spectacular instrumentation of the other players, makes the listener's heart beat in time with the senuousity of the music. The collaboration of the musicians exposes the very essence of a type of music that had previously been trivialized. This recording is as spectacular in its substance as it is in the beauty and amazing clarity of the recording. "Soul of the Tango" is a winner that should be included in every afficiandos collection.

Free Music Review: A jewel among all the other "classical" Tango recordings
Hit: 5 Stars

I was apprehensive when I first read of this CD - could not quite imagine Yo Yo MA and the Tango. I was gladly mistaken, though, for the music is just as sumptous and unique as Piazzolla himself. In fact, the artist plays a "duet" with the composer using an older recording. If you like the Tango, these arrangements are probably some of the best around - tasteful, vigorous, sad and beautiful. Free Music Review: A passionate album
Hit: 5 Stars

You don't have to be a tango-fan to love this album. From the very first track you get trapped in this appasionate album. Although Yo-yo ma is not the main interpeter in many of the pieces of this album, the production and direction are excellent. Every player in this album makes a superb interpretation of Piazzola music. Highly recommended if you like Piazzola, Tango, or if you love intense, passionate interpretations.
