Free Music Review: The best 1990s band from the Seattle scene
Hit: 5 Stars

Superunknown is a killer CD. Soundgarden's music clearly shows its Led Zeppelin/Black Sabbath influences but always sounds original. This is a driving, complex release and time has not diminished its impact.

Free Music Review: A landmark album
Hit: 5 Stars

I'm not a deep alternative fan; I like various songs and artists but I couldn't honestly give you an opinion about the virtues of Alice in Chains over Pearl Jam, nor could I honestly say that I knew or cared a lot about alternative in its heyday. I heard Soundgarden for the first time on, of all places, MSN Encarta, where there's a clip of "Nothing to Say" as an example of grunge. I found the track interesting, and when I had the chance, i downloaded that song, and other songs from Badmotorfinger (which is another great album). I read other reviews that mentioned Superunknown, and decided to buy it and see what it was all about.

It didn't grab me on the first few listens, but as I listened to it more, I realized that it was a tour de force of music, and is definately one of the landmark albums of the 1990's, regardless of genre. The songwriting is very good, and the music is top-notch as well. All of the songs are pretty tightly written and performed ('cept maybe for "Kickstand") and I especially like "Head Down", "Mailman" and "4th of July." It is a pity that Soundgarden is overlooked by many in favor of Pearl Jam and Nirvana, because they are equally the peers of those groups.

Free Music Review: Yes it's good
Hit: 5 Stars

I won't say too much here, cause if you aren't already familiar with at least a couple of songs from this album there probably isn't any hope for you. Anyway, Soundgarden were easily the best of the rather arbitrarily lumped together grunge bands, and this is their best album. (Well, of their last 3. I don't have their early sludge stuff, can't get too interested in it.) It breaks the cardinal rule for me when it comes to hard rock/metal albums: It has more than 10 tracks. Hell, it's got 15 of em. 'Superunknown' is the exception that proves the rule, I believe, as it actually doesn't have anything that I would call filler, nothing mediocre, but it still kinda feels like it could stand to be cut down slightly. 15 songs and 70 minutes is just a helluva lotta music. Nevertheless, you can't argue with what's here.

Again, none of the tracks are bad. This album is quite a bit more varied and melodic than 'Badmotorfinger', though they certainly aren't afraid to sludge it up now and then. The biggest difference is that Chris Cornell has now really come into his own as a vocalist. He was always good, but now he's got the screeching and the melodies down pat. One of the best singers in rock of all-time, period. Also, though his lyrics don't necessarily add up too much in particular all the time, they do tend to be interesting, at least.

The biggest standout track comes in the very middle, 'Spoonman'. Best song Soundgarden ever wrote, with a great stomping-groove main riff like no other. This is one of those tracks that is, as far as I'm concerned, perfect. Not saying it's the greatest song ever, though it's on the big list, if I had one, but it accomplishes it's apparent intentions flawlessly. Other stand outs include the crushing dirge 'Mailman' and the monstrously slow and doomy '4th of July'. 'Black Hole Sun' was horrendously overplayed, yes, but it's still a fun, hypnotic track, and one of the more immediately memorable things here. (Great Vox too.) I also particularly like the relatively energetic title track and the dense, moody 'Head Down' which has great interplay between electric and acoustic guitars. Beyond this you've got the two openers, 'Let Me Drown' and 'My Wave', two of their faster, catchier songs. The album does have a few pacing problems, in that it's only got a few (relatively) up tempo songs, and they're placed too close to the front. (Personally, I think either 'My Wave' or 'Let Me Drown' should be placed towards the very end of the album to balance things out a bit more.) But when you get done to discussing the track order on the album, you know you've only got some really piddling complaints. Again, all those tracks that I didn't mention are still very good.

Brilliant album, this.

Free Music Review: Nirvana Who?
Hit: 5 Stars

SOUNDGARDEN - Superunknown

In my eyes... this album is the defining moment of grunge-rock. Easily destroying anything released by either Nirvana or Pearl Jam during the mid-90's era. In fact, `grunge' aside lets just say this is pretty much the defining moment of Rock & Roll during the 90's.

There was always something special about this CD... having 4 of the industries most talented musicians certainly couldn't hurt... their unique, harder than normal, approach to grunge... which also had a much darker edge than many other grunge/rock bands of that era. What ever it is that caused this synthesis of music is irrelevant! I mean every song is a classic... all 15 songs. Even the so called filler track `half' is amazing.

Thayil's guitar playing was immaculate and creative, Shepard (Bass) and Cameron (Drums) were easily on of the best rhythm sections ever assembled. And Cornell's voice was as strong as a banshee, yet as graceful as an angel.

There are over 270 other reviews and this CD has a - 5 STAR - Rating overall.
Just get it!

Free Music Review: Timeless...90's...Classic
Hit: 5 Stars

Jeeze if only the kids of today were exposed to this stuff, because we all know whatever they are exposed to they will eat up like, like, like termites. Then again, in that case, I wish they weren't too exposed to this because then it would be overplayed and everyone would...well, you know.

Anyways, almost every track to me on this album is good, my favorites being:

My Wave
Fell On Black Days
Superunkown
Black Hole Sun
Spoonman
The Day I Tried To Live
4th Of July

However the rest of the tracks garner much of my attention except for "Half" or "Kickstand" (I can't remember).

Superunkown has all the music anyone would want to here for the rest of their life. This is pure grunge phsychadellia that was missed throughout the 90's because Nirvana sapped up the scene. (I'm not saying I don't like them) Although this did reach multi-platinum, number one, and a couple grammy's, "Superunkown" didn't reach the amount of attention it deserved. YOU can help it today by listening to it.

I strongly recommend picking up this legendary disk, along with the previous Soundgarden work "Badmotorfinger". You will be missing out one heck of an epic.
