I first heard this cd in a birthing class I did with my wife. It was just a sampler cd with shortened tracks, but I got the flavor, and had to investigate what it was. Listening to the sample tracks on line made me hold off for a while, since the 30 second clips don't give a great impression of most of the music. I did end up ordering it after a few weeks, and it's been in our cd player since then.
The best parts of the cd's are simply as good as music can get. Beautiful melodies abound. There is a plethora of styles on here, with a multitude of different instruments and sounds, although piano and guitar dominate.
The second cd is the best. Perfection from start to finish. The first and third are great, but have some material that sounds a bit like filler, but is in no way annoying or unlistenable. What I would describe as filler tracks are the ones which are mostly just predicatble new age piano. But writing 40 good songs for a compilation is a heavy task! A musician would be successful to a degree if they came up with 10 good songs in their lifetime, and this cd has many more than that.
Not only is the songwriting first rate, but the musicianship is spectacular. The playing on these cd's defines professional. It is incredibly soulful, with acoustic guitar and flute defining some of the most heartfelt moments.
My biggest complaint with 3 cd pack is that it is marketed as being for childbirth. What a waste! There are so many people that might be missing out on this music because they will assume that it's cheesy, or good for nothing other than birthing. The musicians who deserve the real credit for this masterpiece are only mentioned in the lineups towards the back of the pamphlet. There are pages in the pamphlet with lines to write stuff like "father's thoughts", and "paste your baby's photo here"... I personally don't like the idea. There are many books out there with way more space to write these things. And while we are given a big picture of the woman who had the idea for this project and probably financed most of it, she didn't do the music, which is what really counts. I would have liked to see a page with musicians' bios or headshots. It's sort of like a great architect designing a building, and a wealthy person just financing it and saying "I want something modern," and then putting a big plaque with his face in front of it. All it says to me is "I have money."
Aside from the musicians not getting proper credit and exposure, I love this cd. It is truly great listening pleasure.
