Free Music Review: "This is the Last Chance" to Hear the Original Cast Sing
Hit: 4 Stars

With two successful movies (and soundtracks) behind them, the original cast of High School Musical came together one last time to sing, dance, and act together. And fans of the first two will enjoy this soundtrack just as much as the others.

As you'd expect, the music ranges from pop to rock to Broadway to hip hop and back again. And I guess I've gotten used to it because even the more hip hop tracks don't bother me as much this go around. Of course, all the songs have a pop based that will appeal to the core audience of pre-teens. They know where their bread is buttered.

And the songs cover just about everything you'd face in the last few months of high school. "A Night to Remember" brings back memories of my own prom every time I hear it. "Now or Never," the song from the previews, covers the push to leave behind a sports legacy. "The Boys are Back" is a fun track that Chad and Troy get to sing about their friendship. And there's the medley that forms the basis of the show they do in the movie, "Senior Year Spring Musical." It's really bits of the songs we've already seen, but they keep it fresh enough that it's still fun.

Probably the funniest track to me is the graduation mix of "We're All in This Together." Basically, they slow down the song from the original movie. Since that is still my least favorite song from the first movie, I'm not thrilled to see it again. And the fact that it is slower doesn't help things at all.

Troy and Gabriella get a plethora of songs this go around. Gabriella solos on "Walk Away" while Troy deals with his frustrations on choosing his future in "Scream." And they get three love songs. My favorite by far is the fast waltz "Can I Have This Dance." Honestly, it's a song that would work for a first dance at a wedding.

No, it's not as much fun as the original soundtrack. But neither is the movie. Still, there are some good songs that anyone will be more than willing to be caught singing.

Free Music Review: Final soundtrack does not disappoint
Hit: 4 Stars

After the tremendous success of the first two High School Musicals, it was inevitable that a third one would come along as well. Making its debut in theaters, High School Musical 3: Senior Year is grander than ever, and it shows not only on the big screen but on the soundtrack as well.

Each song represents some of the typical events that would occur during a high school senior's year: a championship basketball game (Now or Never), prom (A Night to Remember), budding romances (Right Here, Right Now; Just Wanna Be With You), student musicals (Senior Year Spring Musical Medley), and finally, graduation (We're All in This Together). It's a timeline of how most seniors spend their last year in high school. It will probably bring back memories for parents and show children what to look forward to as they get older.

The songs this time around all sound ready for the big screen, and you can really tell by some of the orchestrations. Yes, it is meant to be pop music for pre-teens but if you listen you can hear the amount of thought put into some of the songs (pay attention to the violin arrangement during Can I Have This Dance). Of course they are still all fun and done in typical HSM fashion. While it isn't necessarily a bad thing, it does tend to get old. I feel like producers flaked out on two important songs: the Senior Year Spring Musical Medley is simply a reprise of songs earlier in the movie, and they definitely could have written a song for graduation, instead of simply re-doing a song from the first movie. But hey, I guess if it ain't broke...

The last song, conveniently titled High School Musical, might be the best song from any of the three movies, and is a fitting end to a great CD and a wonderful franchise. With the current cast, anyway. Enjoy!
