Free Music Review: A soundtrack that smells of sunflowers
Hit: 4 Stars

"Impression" is one of four Samurai Champloo soundtracks. Given the eclectic nature of the music, an exact genre or musical style is difficult to pin down. "Impression" is a combination of instrumental music that combines jazz, dance, ambient and hip-hop esthetics. At times, it comes close to smooth jazz but nu-jazz is probably the best single descriptor. The music manages to combine relaxing with hip -a feat that is seldomly achieved. Urban beats usually lay the foundation for relaxing melodies. Force of Nature, Nujabes and Fat Jon share equal thirds of the release. Highlights include the flute infused 'Just Forget' and the sitar soaked 'the Stroll.' 'Set it off' is a trip-hopped ride while the kalimba looped 'Haiku' is one of a four strong interludes. The two vocal tracks don't help what would have been an otherwise fantastic instrumental album. While this music can work for active listening, it is best employed for ambience. While we know that the music works well in the background of martial arts anime, it can also be a hipster's soundtrack to a romantic evening. Comparing "Impression" with the other four Japanese soundtracks, I'd rate this as one of the best, coming in a strong second place. I'd rank them all in the following order: 1) "Departure" 2) "Impression," 3) "Masta" and 4) "Playlist." It can be fun to find these songs within the show, but Samurai Champloo is not required. "Impression" is strong enough of an experience that anyone can enjoy it with an interest in chill music.
