The soundtrack recording of South Pacific is very misleading, upon hearing it initially, one might think the film was marvelous! Wrong!! The film is an abomination, boring, over long and uninvolving. Joshua Logan should have been drummed out of Hollywood for what he did to R&H's masterpiece. The cinematography, using different colored filters for the musical numbers is senseless and downright annoying as hell. This should have been one of the most visually stunning films ever made and it is not. And the pacing of the performances is dreadful. The pregnant pauses in the dialogue are ridiculous. Mitzi Gaynor does inject some life into the film, she was perfectly cast as Nellie, but it's not enough. The film plods along at a snails pace.
But the soundtrack recording is beautiful, doing justice to the fantastic score. Listen and enjoy, but don't be mislead and think it's a wonderful film, it is not. Get the DVD to the Carnegie Hall concert with Reba MacIntyre, it is far more effective and involving than the movie.
