Free Music Review: A fine, sweeping rendition of this sweltering R&H
Hit: 5 Stars

Most people who own this film soundtrack recording of South Pacific think it doesn't match up to the legendary original Broadway cast rendition with Mary Martin. However, this film recording has strengths of its own, and Mitzi Gaynor and Giorgio Tozzi give solid performances of their principal roles. Mitzi Gaynor's Nellie is a different breath of fresh air from Mary Martin. Her voice might lack the belt tones that characterised Mary Martin, but she makes up for it with a stylish spunk and sass. She has an infectuous cockeyed optimism that translates into all her songs, especially on I'm Gonna Wash That Man, A Wonderful Guy and a truncated Honey Bun. Giorgio Tozzi, although a voice-double for Rosanno Brazzi, gives a ravishing portrayal of Emile. It's true that Ezio Pinza has a powerful voice, but listening to Twin Soliloquies/Some Enchanted Evening and This Nearly Was Mine, the listener is able to appreciate a different side to the character of Emile. The rest of the cast is just as strong, as the voice doubles perform their singing parts to a very high standard and act them as well as sing. Bill Lee (who also dubbed Christopher Plummer's Captain in The Sound of Music) gives a ravishing rendition of Younger than Springtime, and Muriel Smith gives a dreamlike rendition of Bali Ha'i and a lightly frolicsome Happy Talk. The soundtrack gains over the Broadway version with sweeping, sumptuous Alfred Newman orchestrations, glorious stereophonic sound and also a rendition of the cut song "My Girl Back Home". It also boasts a highly humorous version of There is Nothin' like a Dame. Overall, a handsome recording of one of the most famous Rodgers & Hammerstein musicals, and worthy of a place alongside the Broadway cast album.

Free Music Review: Cherished memories of My parents from South Pacific
Hit: 5 Stars

The movie," South Pacific is very special for me and my 2 other sisters. The film was filmed on Kauai in the 1950's and in those days, you would work as extra's on the set as a Summer job or to earn extra money. My parents were young and in love and courting each other. They got married the following year but during the filming of this film they were a young couple in love in their early 20's. Throughout the years, Mom would sing the tunes and Dad would join in and they would look at each other so dearingly and lovingly. Dad was a handsome young men and he did that dive off the rock at the opening of the movie. Mom was one of the Hawaiian gals swimming in the ocean leaning on the canoe when Lt. Cable was on the boat to Bali Hai. She was beautiful and gorgeous. When Mom passed on in 2006 (a young 67)...Dad had lost his Island princess and his heart broken. Dad joined mom last year in 2009 and broked our hearts losing them in a short 3 years of each other. I searched on Amazon and was hoping to get the soundtrack and did. When I received it, beautifully wrapped, my heart leaped for joy and when I played the CD,just flood of cherished memories of them singing together embraced me.The music is so dear to me. whenever I miss my parents..I put on the South Pacific CD and it makes me feel closer to them. I can see them singing the tunes In heaven together. I am so happy I got this CD. It put a song in my heart and joy whenever I play the music. Thank you Amazon. Love it. Hearing the CD removes the gap of my parents memory and for a moment it brings them right to me. /In memory of Joseph & Ruth...Aloha

Free Music Review: Best Sounding South Pacific Album
Hit: 5 Stars

This remastered Original Soundtrack Album of South Pacific is very wonderfully done. Lush, beautiful orchestrations go hand in hand with the wonderful singing found herein. Mitzi Gaynor is as nicely suited to the part here as Mary Martin was in the original Broadway version. Rossano Brazzi is wonderful as well, even though his singing is dubbed in by Giorgio Tozzi. Bill Lee steps in here to sing Lt. Cable's songs and is nice... he also did C. Plummer's voice in The Sound of Music.

This new remastered CD is well worth its price and sounds better than ever. Lush gorgeous stereo sound-what are you waiting for?

The Original Cast Album, with Mary Martin and Ezio Pinza, though, will always hold a special place in my heart and is truly the definitive version of South Pacific, but this soundtrack album is definately not bad. It does, of course, put the new TV soundtrack of the Glenn Close production to shame.

Free Music Review: If you are trying to capture the magic of the 1958 movie
Hit: 5 Stars

Original play recordings will always win out for the people that saw it. However I grew up with this movie and there is no other version for me. I have visions of the people and the story as the different song comes up. It was the lyrics to "Some Enchanted Evening" that actually convinced me to get married. And even today I find my self singing "Younger Than Springtime" to my wife. However I do not look it. I even did a review of the movie the day that Ray Walston ...Luther Billis died. "South Pacific" (1958). I will mot go through all the songs on this album. Just if you pick one album this is it. And if you like other versions then you should still add this to the collection for contrast.

One day you will want to make this your own.

South Pacific [Blu-ray] ~ Mitzi Gaynor

Free Music Review: BEAUTIFUL SOUNDTRACK!!
Hit: 5 Stars
