Free Music Review: MItzi Gaynor is wonderful and underappreciated by some

I'm glad to read some of the reviews correcting the conventional wisdom that Mitzi Gaynor does not compare to Mary Martin. She is perfectly suited to the part of Nellie Forbush and does a superb job singing (and acting in the film). Of course Mary Martin is great - that goes without saying, but in this part, Mitzi Gaynor, while different, of course, is every bit her equal - and the orchestrations and other voices are as good as, and in some cases (the orchestration, for one), better than the Broadway version.Free Music Review: South Pacific Original Soundtrack

I watched this movie as a little girl. Matter of fact, I played Bloody Mary in my elementary school's production of South Pacific. I got to do Happy Talk with the hand movements as well. I love Rogers and Hammerstein's musicals. This soundtrack is marvelous. I can't recommend it highly enough if you like this sort of thing. The remake was absolutely horrendous in my opinion. Read my review of My Fair Lady and this will tell you all how wonderful this is. Years ago South Pacific - this one - was the first record I bought for my first stereo console. Have the video and saw the movie numerous times. The music is fantastic and you are so involved with this wonderful CD. Also taped this for my sister in Australia.It isn't just my love for the show - it is so well done and these CD's are fabulous. Remember seeing the movie years ago, and now that I have seen the show playing at Lincoln Center, NYC.....I just had to get this CD. The music and songs are so wonderful and I relive this fantastic play over and over again. This is one of my favorite CDs. Shipping was very fast. Completely satisfied. This by far is the best version of South Pacific I've heard. It puts to shame the new tv movie version with Glenn Close, who can't pull off the little hick act at all. Another advantage the original movie version has over the other is that the original includes the song "Happy Talk", but the other doesn't. Even the background chorus in the original triumphs over both the cast version and the new tv version.
