Free Music Review: South Pacific Terrific
Hit: 5 Stars

Hard to beat this classic R&H score. It loses a little when translated to digital but still terrific.

Free Music Review: The Best We'll Ever Get
Hit: 4 Stars

"South Pacific" is probably my all-time favorite musical. The soundtrack to the 1958 movie-- with Alfred Newman's lush orchestrations, Mitzi Gaynor's unforgettable energy, and the debut of the wonderful song, "My Girl Back Home"-- is the definitive recording of its riveting score. That being said, we fans of the movie and its music deserve much better. The art direction is less than appealing: there is only one image used, and it recurs in various forms throughout the entire packaging, on both sides of the inlay, on the front cover of the booklet, on the disc face, etc. It centers attention too much on the love story between Nellie and Emile, which is only a small facet of the musical's incredible story. That complaint is only cosmetic, though-- a package that's an eyesore is perfectly acceptible. The true failing of this "South Pacific" CD is in the sound. There's something very, very faintly tinny about the way the songs sound, as if they're not remastered but just digitally enhanced somehow. And the "South Pacific Overture" on track one is supremely bad. It's an overdramatic alternate version of Newman's "Bali Ha'i" instrumental that played over the film's opening credits. Couldn't they have added the lavish, dynamic, sonically stunning overture from the beginning of the actual film, as a bonus track if nothing else? There are no bonus tracks on this disc, and all songs are presented in the order they appeared on the original LP rather than the order that follows the sequence of the film. All that being said, it's far better than nothing. I'm sure it must be at least marginally better than the original CD release of the soundtrack. And again, we deserve better... we just won't get it.

Free Music Review: Why Do They Do This?
Hit: 4 Stars

There are two things I would like to hear done with this CD ... The first is to add more music. Most musicals of this nature have an overture, main titles, intermission, and exit music. Why can't all this be included? It's all on the DVD so I know they have access to it.

Secondly, why can't the music be presented in chronological order? While listening to the CD I want my mind to visualize the scene that the music comes from in the order it happens in the film. One explanation always heard is that they want to retain the original album concept. NONSENSE! The vinyl was limited to time and space on each side. The CD can hold almost 80 minutes if they really want to, so they certainly can add more to it and present it as the authors intended.

Why not take advantage of the medium they're using and do it right!!
