Free Music Notes for South Pacific (1958 Film Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: Number two, but very fine in its own right
Hit: 4 Stars

In my book nothing can match the original Broadway cast with Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin. That said, the soundtrack of the movie, with the lovely Mitzi Gaynor and Giorgio Tozzi doing a very creditable job dubbing, is fine in its own right. Gaynor, though perhaps not a great singer, is infectiously enthusiastic and has a great delivery. While I prefer Pinza, Tozzi is quite good too. The one place where the film version falls down in my opinion is in the Bloody Mary songs, but that is not a significant detraction. Recommended, but if you want just one, go for the Broadway Cast, especially now that it is available with remastered sound.

Free Music Review: "Happy Talk"
Hit: 4 Stars

I used to purchase LPs in the 70s of every Broadway cast recording or film soundtrack I could afford as a teen with a part time job. It is odd that it took me so many years to update my CD library with classic R & H scores. This CD of the soundtrack to "South Pacific" is fine in sound quality with ample liner notes. My only caveat is that it did not get the classic Angel Records treatment accorded to "Oklahoma!", "The King & I" and "Carousel".

The music in this sountrack are memorable. We did a concert in our school using the songs and score from this film, complete with some dance number. Good story, good production. I could still sing all the songs from this film. (LOL) Thanks for bringing back the music in compact disc. Much much clearer now!

Hit: 4 Stars

This new CD leaps at you. The brass and vocals are so clear and strong. My old LP version has just been trashed. There's a bit of repetitive fluff but audio wise, it is dynamic.

Free Music Review: South Pacific for Real
Hit: 4 Stars

The soundtrack was exactly what I expected. The sound quality was great and reflected the true essence of the movie. Could not have asked for a better product.
