Free Music Notes for South Pacific (1958 Film Soundtrack)

Free Music Review: Good-but could have been so much better
Hit: 3 Stars

This soundtrack recording of South Pacific is exactly the same as the original LP. Original edited performances, original "tubby" bass sound, same hiss and distortion. If you want memories of just the songs this is OK. The problem is that South Pacific's soundtrack has so much wonderful music, beautiful orchestrations, and outstanding sound that this CD is a very pale comparison. Run the DVD (especially the original roadshow version)and luxuriate in Alfred Newman's and Edward Powell's (and many others) musical underscoring throughout most of 172 minutes. Just breathtaking! And the original 6 track Todd-AO sound is truly spectacular. It's very disappointing that RCA (or Sony-or whoever owns this now) didn't expand this version (like the soundtracks to Oklahoma or Carousel) to include more of this wonderful score. Unfortunately, there aren't many good alternatives to this recording. All the other recordings from the original (with definitive performances but poor sound)to the latest Broadway cast can't match the movie's performances or lush orchestrations. One recording I personally like is Reba McIntire's Carnegie Hall (Decca) performance with good sound, but it has way too much annoying audience noise and applause. Too bad it wasn't recorded in the studio.

Free Music Review: SOUTH PACIFIC: ANOTHER BOTCHED REMASTER FROM RCA
Hit: 3 Stars

The 1958 film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's SOUTH PACIFIC won an Oscar for its spectacular 6 track Stereophonic Sound Mix, which can be heard on the recent DVD release from Fox Video. Unfortunately, this RCA Victor remastering is from a 40-year-old 2-channel tape, which, while a slight improvement over the earlier CD mastering, simply pales by comparison to the DVD sound. Why RCA didn't remaster this popular album from the original 6 track masters is a mystery. If they had done so about 30 more minutes of music from the film not on the original album could have been accommodated on the CD in addition to the vastly improved sound. Unfortunately, this is typical of today's music industry. They keep doing it over and over until it is finally done right, all at the consumer's expense. Ironically, the DVD can be had for about the same money as this outrageously overpriced CD, with both picture and superior sound. Chalk up another botched effort to RCA/BMG.

Free Music Review: This CD falls flat
Hit: 3 Stars

This is the same recording of this show which was released on vynal as an "original soundtrack recording" which of course, it was not really.
The main title isn't the same as in the movie, and the finale isn't the same. this album also leaves out the overture, intermission and exit music which can be found on the video.
They are coming out with more complete soundtrack albums all the time, why can't they come out with this one?

Free Music Review: a poor quality recording
Hit: 2 Stars

I love South Pacific and I am very disappointed that the sound is so poor. It's like they took my LP of South Pacific and gave it to some hobbyist to filter using the free software you get with an inexpensive CD/DVR Writer.
